Anyone know anything about Prince de Monaco rose or ferdinand pichard? Good? Bad? These are to replace some dahlias so need to be eye catcher but need not be fragrant.
@Nollie That’s a great suggestion.. I just looked it up and it seems to tick all my boxes.. and I love the form the blooms too! (I just admit I’m prefer the doubles to singles) - I think I might actually try this one instead of alba..
@rock_hen Thanks a lot. I was in your position last year and was anxious about pruning but trust me, it’s much less daunting when you actually do it. I pruned mine right down in spring (perhaps a bit too much for second year roses) but I grow them in pots and I need them to be of a manageable size..
With regards to those vigorous new basal canes.. it is nerve wrecking pruning them at first but they will produce more branches so don’t worry.
Here’s a picture of what mine looked like after pruning in spring and how it looked like after a few months in summer..
@rock_hen I do the same as @newbie77, let a long cane bloom then cut it back afterwards, at any time, but not so short, to about 2-3ft to keep it roughly shrub shaped. GJ is really a short climber so is prone to throwing out long canes as that’s how it wants to be. I have to work at it to keep it as a large potted shrub.
@Marlorena, can I ask you if you know much about Marie Ducher? I think I am right in saying you have, or had Florence Ducher and if so, how do you find the health, scent, repeat etc? Roseraie-Ducher say they have rescued the lost MD back from New Zealand and ‘it likes heat’, which sounds promising for me.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@celcius_kkw I immediately thought of that one for you as I have looked at it before. Unfortunately my track record with rugosas is abysmal, they just die on me! I have lost 5 Albas, a Hansa and my new Moyesii Geranium is not looking great either. I just have to accept they don’t like it here.

@Nollie , Thanks for that info on GJ's 'I want to be a climber' habit, I wasn't aware of that. Explains why mine has suddenly thrown out three much longer canes. I cut two of them back earlier but left the one with buds on, which is blooming now. It looks rather odd but I can live with it for the sheer pleasure of more blooms this time of year. I'll cut that one down when the blooms are over as I also need to keep it as a large shrub.
@Nollie I’m surprised to hear that.. I think I may have misled myself into thinking rugosas are tough and are prized for their supreme vigour and disease resistance... I think I should really adjust my expectations now..
Roses...the gift that keeps on giving (bit cheesy but true )
All fragrant: Golden Celebration, Thomas A Becket to the right, Gertrude Jekyll to the left, and hidden at the back unfortunately is Mme. Isaac Pereire, with some sweet peas.
@celcius_kkw That's weird because all other sources describe the fragrance as strong (Trevor White - strong, HMF - strong, Beales - fragrant). But I don't have 1st hand experience. I saw it in our garden centre but don't remember flowers on it or smelling it.
I've been smelling rugosas or rugosa hedges this year every time I see them on our walks and sometimes they are fragrant, sometimes not too much.
@Nollie Just to add to your theory (or ruin it), Ebb Tide doesn't do it. It can have diseased leaves for weeks or months while also having healthy leaves. I think Weeks roses are a mixed bunch, as from any other breeder.

Will Google salita and Alexander. Love song looks interesting too.

Are you growing Mme. Isaac Pereire as shrub or climber. I have it with some really long canes. I am not sure whether to cut it or put an obelisk?
