Very interesting stuff about the rotation on the stems.
Today I started clearing an area that I’m going to use for rows of rose cuttings this year at my allotment. Also very pleased to pop out and see signs of life on my poorly Lady Emma Hamilton. Bright red teeny buds in the leaf joints where before there was nothing.
Interesting @Omori...I'll certainly give it a go next year, maybe on the plants which seem to be the worst affected. One of those just happens to have really dark leaves, so the white stains will be much more pronounced, still it would be better than seeing the state it is in now.
@sarinka, Stormy Weather is only in it’s first season but has really impressed me with vigorous growth, lack of disease, attractive matt, olive green foliage and near constant, wine-coloured blooms that fade to a lovely smoky lilac-purple. It’s self-cleaning. Rain, humidity and heat don’t bother it. It’s described as lightly spice scented, I can’t detect any, but you can’t have everything! One of it’s parents is ‘Rhapsody in Blue’.
@Mr. Vine Eye, I wonder why your LEH is poorly? Mine in the ground started extremely late this year and is only now giving me a half-decent flush. However, I remembered I failed to prune it this year, it was already a nice compact shape and I think I probably passed over it for that reason. I also have one in a pot that gets very little sun - that did much better, strangely. Edited to say - I can’t remember whether I pruned the potted one or not!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
I read The Right Roses review of Silas Marner today. I have to say I am surprised they published their review so early (in fact on 27th June), I just don't see a point in judging a rose before the biggest disease pressure in August and before the summer growth spurt. Anyway, I am even more surprised by the content of the review.
I guess everyone sometimes disagrees with some of their points, it's normal to have a different experience with roses, but this time, I disagree with almost everything.
To their points: SM being relatively healthy but not as much as Gabriel Oak or Olivia - Absolutely no BS here. Gabriel Oak right next to it (touching it) lost approx. 15% of leaves. The blooms are very small, 5-9cm range, most of them 5-6cm - No. Not at all. They are perfectly medium/normal here. I would describe the one bloom I have on the plant right now as on the small side as it is 8.5cm. Most of my blooms are in 7-10cm range. They are bigger when they fully open to a flat/more shallow shape which they don't always do, weather depending. Blooms wilting in hot weather, not tolerating heat - Probably not applicable here. I don't dispute this but in our summer, they were perfectly fine. They could be more rain resistant but they are not the worst in that matter, more like average. Not having a strong perfume - It is one of my most fragrant roses. More fragrant than PAoK or Gabriel Oak.
Given how different our experiences are, I think they are right about it not being a good rose for warm climates and it's quite possible it won't make it to the US. I still don't know what to think about the rose because of its growth habit. All in all, I am neither happy nor unhappy with it, I am looking forward to seeing how it develops and I like the cute button eye. I am always happy to see a disease-resistant rose, no matter what other problems it has.

Anyone have grown or know about Silver Jubilee rose, Princess Anne and Dame Judi Dench rose? How is the health and repeat?
Spotted this lovely shaped little flower on Malvern Hills.

The Generous Gardener - damaged cane's gone all floppy on the end.
But this one is proving much easier to manipulate!
And finally the new growth on Lady Emma Hamilton! This is the one I thought was dead.
