On the subject of fragrance. I have a fairly poor sense of smell, but have been sticking my nose into My DA roses for getting on for four years, thinking, nope, nothing (Gertrude Jekyll excepted). Occasionally a very faint whiff of something, but never as described. This year, Munstead Wood smells really deliciously fruity and the first bloom of Lady Emma Hamilton has just opened - astonishingly strong citrus scent for the first time, smelling of a freshly peeled tangerine! I don’t know if they have now matured enough for the scent to truly develop or all that nose diving has finally trained my nose to detect it. Maybe a combination of both.
Lady Em’s first:
Munstead Wood next to a very early dahlia bloom - they didn’t coincide last year. Bit of a colour clash!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Beautiful roses @Nollie my Munstead Wood is only half open and yet it’s already wafting on and off on my balcony. Can’t wait for full bloom.. there are lots of buds developing too.
I do hope my red patio rose is going to show me some colours this year.. I bought it in July last year and it was in flower.. perhaps that was the first flush? We shall see.
Lovely roses people - keep them coming. Yesterday I found in the shed a container of something called Yellow Sulphur, which I suspect came out of my parents old shed more than ten years ago! Is this the same stuff as Rose Sulphur and could I try a bit shaken on the soil around one of my roses which gets bad blackspot do you think?
@Lizzie27 Sounds like it’s similar to this type of product?
@edhelka I’ve seen bags of sulphur (called flowers of sulphur) for a lot cheaper than Rose Sulphur. I’m not sure if there’s any special mojo in the RS or if they’re just charging a premium.
Thanks @Omari, sounds the same, whether it's still effective after 10 years remains to be seen. Will try it cautiously around just one rose to find out!
