  • @Marlorena- yes, Gabriel and Eustacia are beauties and I'm so relieved that the heads stand up!
Do you have any experience of climbing roses Aloha or Kiss me Kate? I have a spare spot next to an east facing fence and would like a very fragrant pink climber with few thorns as it's next to a seating area. I also considered Kathleen Harrop, but I'm worried that it's as prone to blackspot as Zephirine.

I would love that.... absolutely, I would put up with the thorniness for that rose..
..interestingly, it's bred from a Canadian rose, probably Martin Frobisher or Jens Munk,  hybridised with a Bourbon cross seedling, so I gather...  so it's a Canadian Explorer/Rugosa/Bourbon cross, one might say if what I heard is true, but showing the complex mix that goes on with some Austin roses..

@Omori I’ve literally just come across wild Edric yesterday.. some people say it’s particularly hardy and well suited for very exposed growing condition.. I then looked it up and it seems to be classified as hybrid rugosa therefore should have some of rugosa’s indestructible genes but at the same time the hybrid-ness should grant it repeat flowering and fragrance? I’m still shopping around for the perfect rose for the super windy part of my balcony.. I need a rose that can literally survive being thrown around in 40mph wind...

  • @Omori @Marlorena I absolutely love Wild Edric, blooms all summer, very healthy and the fragrance is divine! Doesn't seem to like too much pruning though, mine has sulked a bit this year after I gave it a good chop in January.

That's really interesting Marlorena, I had no idea! They should breed more roses like this, make a nice change...somehow the thorns aren't as bad because it's so sturdy, on floppier roses I feel it's worse somehow to be covered in thorns.

Wild Eric looks FANTASTIC! Thanks. The rugosa-ish foliage is a nice touch.

Looks a bit vicious though... oh well no pain no gain....

Thanks for making me laugh for the first time today @Omori (albeit at my own half-wittedness)

    I thought, what's a Lab Holding Sock?

Are there any roses which will thrive in total light shade, up against a wall. The area gets a tiny amount of sun this time of year, but that's it.
