  • I got one of these texts today because  I'm eligible for the flu jab because of having Parkinson's Disease. I'm in the early stages and have no respiratory symptoms so was a bit miffed but do understand that they can't analyse everyone's individual circumstances so I just have to make my own judgement on what risks I will take.

Most scientists here would say that the reasons that have done so well are: fantastic contact tracing, a population that obeys rules, they were not fined, but arrested for breaking social distancing.

I'm sorry if I went hard at you, but it's just that the scientists there say that one of the reasons is mask wearing, and I don't think their scientists are worse than ours.

When our government was not following other countries' leads, and not doing the lockdown, they claimed it was 'following the science.' People calling for the lockdown were treated like they just weren't clever enough to understand the science - although the UK was clearly an outlier internationally. I actually fell in line and was convinced by the 'following the science' line, but that policy was soon proved disastrous.

I feel like the mask situation has been similar (probably not remotely as serious) a mistake and again, the science appears to be changing (as they like to put it).

Reading between the lines, they don't want the public to compete with NHS for PPE.
I think that's probably right, in a nutshell. Does feel like we're being managed rather than being given the 'straight dope'.

If the evidence was strong, we would have been told to do it long ago.
    The evidence has not changed.
I spent my whole career wearing facemasks most of the time. They are uncomfortable, they do make you touch your face, repeatedly and they become wet after about 30 minutes and therefore useless.
If people want to wear them, fine, but don't think they will help, because they won't. If you do choose to wear one, there is no point wearing a surgical mask, a pair of pants would be equally [in]effective.

Morning, floralies, hoping for good news of your son. Punkdoc, yes, same here, I have done barrier, reverse barrier and isolation.  Never worn the stuff the guys have to wear now, or for that length of time. Have been amused to see people walking along with a bit of cloth underneath their glasses, people in the "normal" blue surgical mask, taking them on and off.  I always been a huge advocate of hand washing, people have always taken the pee out of me, not just now, but always gone shopping, wash hands, put shopping away, wash hands again.  I expect you watched the same vidoes as the rest of the staff, regarding the aerosol effect, of bodily fluids, seen the "unseen germs, coughing violet, I never failed the UV hand washing test.I see from Obelixx you have to wear them in France, and they can be home made, I reckon it will come in here soon, I agree it gives people a false sense of safety.

Hello all, thanks so much for all your thoughts and good wishes. There was some slightly better news last night, my son is having some physio and they think he is beginning to hear a little, he is still stable but of course we have been told to be very cautious. I really feel for all of you with the same worries, please stay positive.

Wouldn't the face shields be a better idea, as the virus can enter through the eyes as well as the nose, these can be easily made.

Lyn the masks are just to prevent you passing on anything, not to shield the wearer.

The clear sheet masks just seem better, probably not then.
As Punkdoc says, the homemade cotton masks won’t shield much, if you can blow a candle out you can cough out.
