Hello , just reading back , hope Hogweeds gets better One of my nieces is a Paramedic and she got it , pleased to say appears to be ok now she is ex military and as fit as fiddle and back to work
I've got to go to the dentist later this week and they've instructed me to wear a 'face covering'. Nothing more specific than that. We've bought a pack of fabric ones from Elle that apparently covid proof but they're not tight fitting above the nose so they're about one step above better than nothing. I suspect it will become the norm to ask for them though whether you believe in their effectiveness or not.
I’m going to my dentist today to have a wisdom tooth extracted. Not looking forward to it.
I got my wisdom tooth pulled last week. The dentist required both a Covid 19 nose/brain swab test (with negative results, obviously) AND a blood antibody test. Both of which I will be charged some amount for by my insurance.. a mystery as of yet what the total will be.
I had to have a filling put in the tooth directly next to it (which is why he recommended the wisdom tooth come out).. and he did both at once. Pulled out the tooth and then put in a dental dam with holes cut out.. with suction under.. so he could complete the filling. I assume it was to keep air from being breathed direct at him while hopefully the suction thing took most of the moist germs away. Pretty clever. He had on a mask and shield, of course.
I know. I miss the NHS.. I had one baby in the U.K. and another one in the U.S.. what a contrast! For all the issues with the NHS, it's far superior to our system. Covid-19 is certainly an example. How will these people on a ventilator or ICU ever pay back the costs? Even with good insurance, the out-of-pocket cost per day is astronomical. In my state, we have people dying from Covid-19 at home (not care homes) between the ages of 45-68.. my guess is they don't have insurance and are trying to 'suffer' through. It's so tragic.. and it's happening across the country.
Even to get tested costs money. My insurance should pay for most of mine (I had to already pay $50 up-front for the antibody test) as it was requested by the dentist as necessary for 'a medical procedure'. They will also cover most of the cost of the test if I have three or more symptoms.. but not less. Like if my husband were to test positive, and I had two symptoms.. they would still not pay for my test (currently about $500, last I heard from a teacher friend who got tested due to close family exposure). I've read a number of stories in the comment section of our local paper about how they are typically only testing one person in the family.. and then not testing the others, just telling them to assume they also have Covid-19. But obviously this is not added to our state total, as not confirmed positive results.. so my assumption is that the U.S. total is WAY under counted.
I am so angry about how the U.S. has managed this pandemic.. shame on all our state and national leaders.. and all those idiots that refuse to wear a mask because it treads on their 'Merican liberties.. and those that can't refrain from gathering in large indoor groups.
Calling from a small Irish offshore island. We are blessed that covid has been well managed over here. Although puzzled that visitors from the UK and US are getting in. All the offshore islands were quarantined for months and I am nearly 80 so cocooning anyway. As I have no working immune system I live in happy isolation. Am back two days from hospital, having been air ambulanced in by R118 air sea rescue. my first physical encounter with the outside world since all this started. It was a "culture shock.". Out here we wear no masks etc and are safe. On my way back home I was shocked in towns to see visitors strolling about maskless. I watch what is happening in my homeland there.
Stay safe out there. My garden is my resting place. Only place that makes real sense.
@islandanchoress I wish you a quick recovery from your ailments.. a garden is a wonderful resting place. I spend many hours sitting outside working on my laptop, looking over the green of my garden. It makes me feel much less stress and worry about the world outside my boundary.

Thank you and it must be wonderful to have so many days when the weather allows to sit out! My peace is won by the wider scene here; I am surrounded by wide ocean and wider skies. I am healing from the current crisis but the CFS/ME is as my shadow, inseparable. Life though is still a wonder and a miracle.

I have loved ones in BC Canada so I hear the US news. And have lost touch with a dear dear friend in Texas; I keep sending her flower picture emails.
Here in ireland we have a two tier health care system. I am English and came here over 20 years ago. As a disabled pensioner I have a Medical Card ie free health care. It works well and was an easy transition. I have CFS/ME. to a disabling degree, which is not recognised here to any degree so stay clear of "health care" just asking pain relief etc. It is far easier here to do that than it was in the UK!
Ireland has handled covid excellently. A blip just now but numbers are down and staying down. I wrote on my weblog re my experience with the hospital. Out here we are free; they immediately quaratined all the offshore islands. Easy to do. We are however having the same issues as all countries with young folk just not heeding or respecting the situation and for some reason still letting UK and US folk enter the country. I think that that will be sorted this week.
Mayo is a deeply rural county with a scattered population. Low numbers on our coasts thus.
On the way home from hospital I was shocked to see so many tourists not wearing masks. I wore mine on the ferry and until my door was closed; no way would I risk bringing that disease in. And as I do not have working immune system I stay home all the time anyways. covid would finish me! They are now working to make masks mandatory.
I stayed in Westport years ago on a tour of Ireland with my Canadian roommate from the University of Swansea during my year as an international student. It was beautiful and quiet.. it felt 'off the beaten track'.. I still remember a lively pub with proper Irish music played by locals. It felt a bit like something out of a movie.
Your island life sounds amazing. I love remote wild places.
Did you have to quarantine when you got back on the island? My aunt and uncle have a house on an island off the coast of North Carolina and the residents have self imposed a 14 day quarantine and no rentals to tourists, etc. Not everyone is following the rules though, and they aren't gov't ordained.
