Senior SIL has had 2 or 3 short stays in hospital in the last 6 months being given chemo for a blood cancer and then intravenous antibiotics for a couple of infections that have proved hard to clear up.
She's just come home again with an added bonus - Covid! Neither patients nor staff on her ward were required to wear masks. How daft is that?

@pansyface I went in on the 3rd of July for my new knee op on the 4th. Masks to be worn at all times once in the building, let alone near any wards with respiratory or infectious diseases. Left on the 8th just as a new spike in Omicron was being announced and no-one allowed in the building after that without a Covid Pass (vaccination certificate) and a mask.

What a contrast, OH went in for his hip op on 8th August at a private hospital but paid for by NHS. We wore masks to go in the first time but were told it was purely voluntary for both staff and visitors/patients so we didn't bother thereafter. Only a few people wore them.
This is an interesting and notable article on Covid infections causing possible immune reactions that damage nerve cells in the brain. Relates also to Long Covid and ME. It may cause later elevated risk of dementia if the brain cells were badly affected by the virus.
People have related for decades that ME causes changes in brain function and were often told "it is all in your head".
There’s so much we don’t know, or may never know, about COVID and other viruses. I am of the opinion that viruses are capable of causing all sorts of havoc.
Perhaps more research will be done, perhaps some things in nature cannot be fathomed or avoided, and perhaps more ailments/symptoms will just be conveniently put down to ‘post viral’.
The idea of "post viral havoc" (PVH) is quite new. Much of the medical field did not accept that ME or glandular fever or Covid could cause brain damage. So, as ho hum as it sounds, the article is quite revolutionary.
Now we just need all the sceptical GPs and other medics to read, digest and have a "light bulb" moment so they are more receptive to post viral problems and how debilitating they can be if not treated, at the very least with sympathy and understanding, and, at best, with some decent therapies.

Studies like the above will really help with this transition, esp if there are clear links to the later development of dementia (which actively terrifies rich and "important" populations). Long Covid studies have added jet propulsion to post-viral studies. I posted the link yesterday to the huge ME DNA study just started. Massively funded - 30 years late. The funding was actually in place before Covid struck, but it's got global, high profile attention because of Covid, Long Covid and the demographic of people who have had it.

Take care everyone.
