Even if the numbers of covid patients doesn't increase (big if), that pressure that @steveTu refers to was already unsustainable in this part of the country where health resources are very thin. The staff absences will be enough, extra patients or no. It doesn't seem to have reached us yet, in numbers. I fear it may just be a matter of time

Interesting that Brian May (Queen guitarist) & his wife (Anita Dobson) have caught Covid even after being triple-jabbed. I've a lot of time for Brian and I found this article quite informative. Just scroll past the rock adverts.
There's definitely an assumption that if you've had all the jags, you're immune. You aren't - you're just less likely to be seriously ill or worse. There was a guy of 32 on our news last night. Still struggling months afterwards. He thought that, since he was young, and relatively healthy, and all his relations and friends were vaccinated - he would be fine, and didn't need to bother. He thought wrong. Idiot.
It's down to numbers just now, re problems in hospitals, as @raisingirl is indicating. 1% of 100 is a very different scenario from 1% of 1 million. You don't need to be a clinician to work out why it could be disastrous. With the best will in the world, higher numbers of cases means there will be admissions, even if those people aren't seriously ill. Straw and camel's back.
We've had children being admitted up here @fidgetbones, hence my earlier post. Medics were expressing concerns about it. I'm not saying it's huge numbers, but the fact that there are increasing numbers of kids being affected enough for hospitalisation, is certainly a worry.

People like John Campbell (ggrrrr. Two million Youtube subscribers) keeps saying loudly that Omicron is a great thing because it clearly signals that Covid variants are globally getting weaker and the disease is on the road out: It signals the end of the pandemic. @punkdoc Does it suggest any such thing? Is it not likely that another more deadly variant could appear at any point and spread eaqually well? Thanks for your thoughts.
As you suspected, it does not mean this at all. We have no idea what the next variant will be like. All you can say, is that the more deadly a virus is, the less successful it is likely to be. If it wipes everyone out on contact, the virus will quickly die out. By this logic, Omicron is very successful, highly transmissible and only moderately severe.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
Campbell has so many people hanging on his every word daily. He seems to love the celebrity. He talks loads of rubbish. Really quite dangerous.
What makes you say this.! Campbell reviews all the relevant publications. He always references what he says and encourages you to read the original and make your own mind up. There are loads of others that spout far more rubbish, not backed by anything.
... things like omicron is really good news - because it means that the threat is now over. He also reviewed a paper that says that having a Covid vaccine pushes up the risk of heart attack to 25% (?). He starts by saying he hasn't read or even found the paper and might be fake, and then reviews it. Loads of people comment saying they have heart worries and therefore they will not have any vaccine - taking his comments as strong evidence.
He says 'herd immunity' will general rise with levels of Covid infections and protect populations. He seems to be profiling all the reasons not to have vaccines - That they will give neuro disorders, pericarditis, spontaneous abortion, heart seizures. He is a rally point for anti-vaxxers.
He supports the use of ivermectin. And he talks about "alternative facts". Where have we heard that before?
If you have an audience of many millions, I think you have a real responsibilty to be as accurate, specific and precise as you can be and not get caught up in the cult of your own celebrity.
