...yes.. join the queue edhelka... Paul's roses are difficult to come by even in the States... I told him once that I loved his 'Grenadier Cottage' rose... but it's never been generally released over there either... and if you look up 'Gallicandy'... you will see it's another Austin cross... ..he considers 'Marianne' his best rose, but for a rambler there's none better than 'Mel's Heritage'....
..incidentally.. I best mention in case anyone thinks otherwise, to never download or copy any of his photos to share online... if he ever finds out he gets really, really angry as all his photos are copyrighted... I know from experience as he once 'exploded' with me over it..
...completely agree about having a story behind the rose... history is quite fascinating with roses I think..
@Marlorena thanks for the info, what a fascinating thread, I am reading this from Brussels;) I have quite a few old English roses planted in my Belgian garden by the previous owner who was Spanish, and I am British and continuing the tradition. This is a very international place, and imports from abroad old and new are thriving in the garden - taking a historical view, I am glad those Victorian plant collectors just went for it!
@RedSquirrelAbroad … thank you... yes this thread has had its ups and downs, so delighted you looked in here and found something useful.... we are much indebted to those Victorian plantsmen.. I think we still have a few in the modern age of that ilk...
I love the sound of your very international rose garden... we shall probably have a dedicated rose thread this Spring... I do hope you look in again and post some photos of your roses during the season... they will be much welcomed here by me at least... and you may have something rare and unusual too... kind regards...
Back to discontinued DA roses for a bit, I was browsing the 100+ DA roses available from TCL in the Netherlands and came across Auspero - or Prospero as it is known in the UK. It was the unusual pointed petal form that caught my eye, looking rather dahlia-like.
It gets an excellent report on helpmefind disease resistance, bloom frequency, rich colour, repeat blooming, fragrance and (critical for me) heat tolerance!
Is is really possible it has all of those attributes? It sounds too good to be true!!
@ Marlorena, @edhelka or anyone know of this rose?
(PS - Also available from Trevor White for UK buyers)

@Nollie … I've heard it's a wimpy grower and should not be pruned hard.. just deadheaded... it does have a great scent though.... I've sniffed this one as my local nursery still carries it here, potted up in Spring... I've often thought of picking one up but I can't have everything... I know people in coastal California and coastal Australia that have it, doing well enough... might be worth a try?... I expect it will need some pampering Nollie...
..we shall have to start this new thread soon... if you're wanting a richly scented red/crimson rose... and I mean a scent to die for... that is also suitable for a warmer climate than ours... you might consider the one sold by Peter Beales as 'Francis Dubreuil'... I had it a few years ago and I want another one.. I shall probably wait for the potted version..
...the name is incorrect but sold everywhere under the 'FD' name.. it's really a 1930's German bred hybrid tea called 'Barcelona'... just look at this wonderful colour from a September bloom...
Thanks Marlorena, I don’t mind wimpy as in slow growing and not so tall, which seems to sum up the hmf comments. Also it’s described as more a purple/deep pink rather than red, which would suit the new border. I’m not sure how much more room I am going to have in the new border though, but will keep it in mind.
FD/Barcelona is a stunning colour, but I have an aversion to the hybrid tea form, which is an old prejudice, but one I just can’t bring myself to get over!

Excited to see these lovely new shoots on one of my new bare root roses. The other four look healthy as well. Can't wait to see the actual colour flowers though.
