Morning - plenty of jobs to do today but it will feel like a hanging-around-and-waiting one. One job is to replenish the rat poison blocks. The rats have really tucked into those - 6 blocks in 2 bait boxes nearly all gone in less than a week😬

Slightly concerned about sister-in-law who lives in suburbs SW of Canberra. ACT have just declared a state of emergency and the map indicates the worst fires are about a 20 minute drive from her. From her Faceache account it seems they were on a ‘Be prepared to evacuate’ alert - but that was nearly 24hrs ago and things seem to have escalated since then. She certainly posted some scary pictures of the fires burning in the distance two days ago. She’s probably a bit too far into the suburbs to be in real danger but fingers crossed everything’s ok. Just sent her a text so we’ll find out in a bit.

T'Bird, really scary stories coming out of Australia. I hope sincerely that your rellies are prepared for whatever happens and stay safe. It must be a worry for you. My niece and her OH live in Melbourne at the moment and I haven't had any alarmimg news from there as yet. They are moving back to Perth in March which my brother and sister-in-law are happy about. They miss their two chicks. My nephew is going, as one of his Unit's paramedics, to Sydney in March where they are doing a demolitions course. I'm worried about the harbour bridge!

Text back to say SIL is about 6 miles from the really big fire(s). That's not very far... They are both OK but ready for action. At the moment there's a lot of ash everywhere and they are on very high alert for burning embers dropping out of the sky. Not sure how well she'll sleep tonight. Think I'd be taking it in turns to watch and sleep...

I've never been to Melbourne LB - but it's on the list. Lokks very pretty and I believe they have very good foody markets.

Pansy - you know how I like lists so I do have a mental grab-bag list (from our yachting days). Phone, charger, power bank, medication, iPad, credit card, cash, passport, knickers. In that order.

If I have my phone I can contact almost anybody of any importance and all bank / document / passport / insurance info is accessible from there. I can even use it to get £300 cash every 24 hrs in an emergency. With the possible exception of medication (in some parts of the world) everything else is get-roundable. Wonders of technology...

I’m back from my appointment.  Everything as expected.  Let’s hope the rellies are kept safe and can get assistance.  I really do feel for them and all the animals, so tragic, and hope the fires are extinguished very soon.   As you say LB some scary reports.

My grab bag almost mirrors yours T'Bird but Lily comes before the phone at the start of the list. I feel very guilty whinging on about rain when in the grand scheme of things we get off comparatively lightly here.
Glad to hear all went well with your appointment Rosie.

Oh yes LB - My cats would always have been top of mine too (although they never came on a boat!). I would have taken stupid risks to get them out of a house fire.

Glad your appointment went ok Rosie. The post has brought the all-clear on some tests I was waiting on as well. I wasn't worried about them but it's nice to have the reasurrance before we go away.

Most jobs done now so time for lunch - then I can wash my hair and have some down time before dinner.

Glad you got the all-clear on your tests too T'Bird. As you say its always reassuring. I am just going to raid the larder myself. Truth is I have not much appetite at the moment but I need some fuel!

Soup may be your best friend LB. I like making my own but I'm quite happy having tinned and fresh store bought too. Jerusalem artichoke is my favourite homemade one - a really nutty, almost mushroomy taste and velvety smooth - yum.

Tomato soup with a kick of chilli. Just the job. I'll scrounge that recipe when you get home T'Bird. It does sound very good.
