Ours ate with us ... we never sat up with them for more than 20 mins or so ... we then told them that we were going to bed to sleep and so were they. Then I lay on our bed in the next room and talked to them on and off until they (and often I) fell asleep. I didn’t go back into their room. If they became very distressed I sat in the doorway and talked to them occasionally while I read my book. They got the message.Â
If they woke in the night (son had a lot of ear infections) warm milk and/or Calpol etc was given and then we went back to bed and talked to them across the landing.Â
As she got older @WonkyWomble became a right PITA ... she could climb out of her cot almost before she could walk so we put her in a low single bed. In the middle of the night she would get out of bed, come into our room, ho to th  we’d foot of our bed and crawl up between us under the duvet and fall asleep. We didn’t wake but in the morning we felt as if we’d had a rather uncomfortable night 🙄 She stopped doing it when she learnt to smuggle her cat Socks (and occasionally her pet rabbit called Mouse) into her bed without us noticing 🙄 We gave up worrying and slept ... 🛏 🙏Â

Possum didn't sleep thru the night till she was 18 months old but after hearing about the 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes rule I never went and sat with her, just went in, made sure she was comfortable and said she had to sleep. She did hate going to bed and missing things so would cry and cry till I went in. Â
Wit the 5/10/15 system, if she cried again I'd wait 5 minutes before going in. The next night it would be 10 and by the time I got to 15 minutes she'd learned it was OK. Still didn't stop her waking in the early hours so we'd start again.  The first time I slept thru till 8am without being disturbed I ran along the corridor thinking she must be a cot death. She was sat in her cot burbling to her cuddly toys.
OH was working away in Utrecht for the first two years of her life so missed all the fun except at the weekend and tended to sleep thru it all anyway.
To be fair when he's not ill he sleeps very well and we never get any fuss at bedtime. We've been a bit more jumpy than usual since his brother was born because if he cries long enough then he wakes the baby and the baby being awake keeps him awake  We were kind of hoping it would start settling down a bit by now though. After the winter illness season passes and now the baby is eating more solids it should get better... probablyÂ
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
if ours cried, we'd go in , make sure they were dry, not in danger of any sort and walk out, no chatting, no cuddling ,nowt". If they cried for 10 minutes , we'd repeat the process until they got bored.Â
Same here, no chatting, no eye contact, don’t make a social occasion of it.  If they wake each other up, so be it, they’ll go back off eventually and although it’s heartbreaking to listen to it, they will soon cry for less and less time.Â

Low voltage ceiling spots!! When we moved here the annex conversion, former pig shed apparently, was duly completed by a professional team to make our walk in pantry, boot room and summer "kitchen"/pottering room/doggy bedroom. The electrician installed lovely bright, low energy ceiling spots in the new ceilings. One has just blown.

@wild edges, spare a thought for my poor niece, she's already got a nearly 3 yr old and is having twins next week! I can't imagine how she's going to cope.Â
