Thanks @j.paul27 I did buy an infuser from Amazon and am very pleased with it. Waitrose sell Assam loose tea. I bought some last weekend and initially I wasn't keen on it. But during the course of the week I've got to really like it - about 2 level t-spoons in the infuser for a good strong mug of tea the colour of golden rust.. I've now used it all so I've just made a cuppa with a Waitrose Gold T bag and I don't like it anymore..... So I'm going to stock up on Assam loose tea when I do the weekly Waitrose shop tomorrow

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
just watched a documentary on this recently which made me go off pretty much all tea bags as others have pointed out instead of using plastic they now use bio plastic.
Most people don't know what bio plastic even is but essentially it is plastic as in if you eat it or if a fish eats it it can't digest it. It won't decompose in the ocean either. For centuries so it might be called bio plastic but all it means is it is a plastic that is not made out of oil.
It can decompose - but only if done under high temperature and pressure which does not occur naturally (and who does that)
Yes, that was my understanding too. From what I've read bio-plastic will decompose if put in the green waste that councils collect. This is heat treated (so I've read) and will break down bio-plastic.
So tea bags in the green waste the council picks up is good, but not in your compost bin.
I'm a convert to loose tea now anyway

"Most people don't know what bio plastic even is but essentially it is plastic".
I think it very much depends on what it's made of - sugar, corn starch, potato starch, sawdust, soya etc and how it's processed. Some will easily decompose in contact with water or a home compost heap.
The problem is that it's blastedly hard to find out from the makers; I think most of the sales people / councils have no clue what's in their products. Why the field can't be properly regulated nationally is beyond me.
I love tea & don’t come to life until I’ve had at least 3 mugfuls. However I’m not overly fussed which variety I buy, usually it’s the cheapest on the shelf or the one on offer (I have been known to drink anyone’s so long as there’s no sugar in it if they’ve been foolish to let it linger around for too long......fresh or old I’ll have it). But I would like to avoid the plastic in the bags, just checked the PG Tips website and not all their bags are plastic free but they say they are currently moving to that point. Hope I haven’t grossed you all out!
well teabags are a problem but out of all the straw, paper bag and other problems I don't think tea is the most important one to tackle, it's more the mentality that things are done to save costs not save the planet that is the main problem, ie use plastic in tea bags and develop a bio plastic not for the sake of making something biodegradeable but because bio-plastic is cheaper than oil based plastic these days. Then whack a bio in front of the name and make more profit. I personally have a big issue with Trump's big wall but what I have a bigger issue with is that the UK wants to build something that will cost 15 times more money. Who wants something that will cost 15 times more money than trumps wall? Do we have 15 times more money than america? It's ludicrous.

No it isn't.
your data is probably outdated. Prices have changed in the past few years but again overall is that really the most important thing to take out of this?
I honestly don't care which is more expensive - I know these companies have not done it for the right reasons.
I at least know which brand to get once my current ones run out - everyone seems to be going towards yorkshire tea
