Wildlife camera

I have told OH I'd like a wildlife camera for my birthday and he's said it's a good idea and he'll have one two - birthday 2 weeks later - so we can cover more of the garden.

Any recommendations for a good basic camera to get us started and what features we should be looking for?

The Apeman series get very good reviews. I have the H68. Look at Amazon. You’ll pick them up cheaper than the budget high street shops.

LIDL in France has a different range of specials from the UK but we can do Amazon from anywhere so I'll look up the Outback and the Apeman.  Thanks.

I’ve just bought one for OH for his birthday!  I got it from https://www.wildviewcameras.co.uk/shop/wildlife-cameras
    and posted to France.

They were really helpful in choosing one, and explaining features. Yes, more expensive than the basic models sold by large supermarkets, but so far we’ve been happy with the quality and ease of use.  The pictures are ok, but we only we are only in our first week so still working out adjustments and not much to show!   We wanted a solar rechargeable one as there is a lynx in local forest so we want to be able to leave it out for days and take video rather than stills.

I personally would get one better quality one between you rather than two. I think you’ll find that after a while you know exactly who is visiting which bit of the garden so you won’t need 2 operating at the same time.

I gave good feedback to them, and got this in reply

    “Oh thank you

You have supported an independent family run business, that was founded from our love of watching our UK wildlife, while Amazon tries to terminate us. 😊

Enjoy the camera, they are very addictive, and here for support or further accessories if you require.”

I have the Apeman one, although I haven't used it this year. It was about 50 quid.

Thanks Helix.  Our plot includes pasture and hedgerows and is 1.4 hectares/3.5 acres with the house more or less tucked in one corner so we thought one camera nearer the house and pond and t'other out in the old orchard area would cover any activity or lack of it and whether things improve as we plant new shrubs and trees and get the "meadow" going.

Any reason why you haven't used yours this yar @Fairygirl?

I keep forgetting to do batteries for it @Obelixx. That's the one drawback - it takes 8 double AAs. I have loads of rechargeables, but the ones I got a while ago aren't great.

OK, so we need to consider power source too.

I think most of them are battery operated - but don't quote me on that.
I have two chargers, and I usually buy the batteries online, although the chargers often come with a set included.  It's the best way of doing it. I use them for my camera and the outdoor thermometer etc.

OK.  We have a wee weather station which has a battery operated temperature reader but solar powered wind and rain measurement.  Odd really.
