I have a confession to make:Ā I am a dedicated fan of Christmas!Ā BUT - I absolutely loathe the hype (why can't I sit down on an ordinary sofa?Ā And why must I order a new one just for Christmas?), I loathe the endless, mindless Christmas musak on repeat (and repeat) everywhere I go.Ā I cannot stand the flashing, over-decorated houses, which the local TV station feels duty-bound to film in all its tasteless glory.Ā And I simply hate all the frenetic advertising that accompanies it all. Ā
That is so not me!Ā I plan in advance.Ā My cake is made and is being fed regularly with brandy, ditto the pudding.Ā I will make and freeze certain dishes in advance.Ā I will order my turkey, organise my ham, and decorate the house in what I like to think is a tasteful way.Ā Nothing will flash.Ā Nothing will scream over-the-top consumerism.Ā But it will be a lovely and enjoyable festival.
Understated but full of the joy of Christmas, I like to think.Ā I have a friend who is on the same page!Ā We exchange photos of our decorated Christmas trees.Ā We love our hand-made Advent calendars and I make my own Advent ring. Ā
Since we moved here and I joined the patchwork group I find myself making Xmas decs from felt and/or fabric and beads/sequins/whatever.Ā Ā It's restful and therapeutic and the results are more subtle than anything I've seen in the shops and won't break if they fall.Ā Ā I've also done Xmas themed table runners and a cloth and am doing a wall hanging for this year.Ā Ā None of them go up till the week before Xmas tho.
Love Xmas too but en famille, not all the hype, musak, relentless commercialisation.Ā Our Xmas cards are from the RHS and have no religious sentiment, just good will.
My moan is people moaning about Christmas. If folk want to put up their decorations on November 4th what harm does it do to anyone else?
My complaint isn't so much with what people do in the privacy of their own home, but with shops who fill the place with "C" tat from the middle of September.Ā Our nephews birthday is in November and it's almost impossible to find decent birthday cards at that time of year.Ā As for the festive musak.......
As someone with a mid December birthday, Dove, Iāll tell you what annoys me: my cards get to go up for about two days before their place is commandeered for new Christmas cards. Head officeās birthday is in June - her cards can stay up for about a month.
We always kept sonās cards up over Christmas! Ā And now OH and I are together the established way is that his birthday cards are displayed all together on the sideboard and the ch******s cards are displayed around the rest of the living area ... they all come down together in time for Twelfth Night.Ā
I think you should make a stand and start a new tradition in your house @BenCotto šĀ

OH's birthday is 7th of December and when we lived in Belgium he'd do his best to persuade me to have the tree up and decorated for St Nicholas o the 6th as that's when Belgian kids get their big prezzies.Ā Ā Come Jan 1st I'd be itching to get rid but now Possum is adult and living away during term time I get to have the tree up just in time for her coming home.
My birthday is two weeks earlier so we both get to have our cards up for 2 weeks before any Xmas cards go up.
