If you want a short climber for an obelisk, you could try Sandringham from Beales. It can be grown as a larger shrub or small climber. They recommend it for pillars and obelisks. I've only had it for one season so can't judge its disease resistance or growing habit but the fragrance is awesome, truly intoxicating.

    Sandringham looks lovely.

Any feedback on DA Bathsheba, Pilgrim and A Shropshire lad roses?

Also any feedback on Kordes Aloha? Anyone tried getting Perfuma range of Kordes roses? I am getting inclined to kordes roses for disease resistance but I cant let go of fragrance completely.

I looked at Kordes roses long and hard and had a fair few on my list, but somehow always found something better elsewhere, often coming down on the side of a Meilland rose instead. Marlorena also warned me that Kordes roses can be very thorny and a little coarse looking. I was focussing on their range for hot and sunny spots though, rather than perfume, which is usually the attribute that drops off when searching for disease-resistant, repeat bloomers that can also cope with my high temps.

However, I do have high hopes of La Rose de Molinard  which is meant to be a heat-tolerant, healthy, disease-resistent, repeat bloomer with a strong fragrance... I will be amazed and delighted if all of that is true!

You can get too obsessed with resistance (like me!) and miss out on some beautiful roses, so do choose some just for their fabulous fragrance.. what’s a bit of black spot between friends, after all?

  • I grew A Shropshire Lad @newbie77 in my previous garden and it was gorgeous. Wonderful fragrance and the pinky peach coloured blooms were lovely, especially against the large dark foliage. Did tend to get a bit of blackspot near the end of the season but was nice to have, almost got one for our new garden. When I was looking for climbers I almost got DA Mortimer Sackler (despite carrying the name of the disgraced Sacklers) instead went for Zephirine...may live to regret planting it, but has done well so far.

….just to say that Kordes 'Aloha' is not the same rose as the oft recommended climbing rose 'Aloha' [Boerner 1949]… the Kordes rose is sometimes listed as 'Aloha Hawaii'...

...some of their roses also change their names when arriving over here... worth checking on that...'Herzogin Christiana' is 'Earth Angel' for instance... it's also worth noting their ADR winners.. these are the ones I would be choosing... I did have a list of Kordes I wanted to order... 'Fraulein Maria' would be one from that range, it looks really nice for a floribunda...

@newbie77 @Marlorena, I too am looking at orange/yellow roses and was wondering what your thoughts were (if any) on 'Pat Austin'?  t i a
  • Morning mist is a lovely rose if you are looking for orange/peach colour it's another DA rose. Also it's single flowers so good for wildlife in the garden

This winter we are clearing a central bed , and the hubby has just suggested putting trellis on one side ( it would be 6' long ×5' tall approx. free standing with a path behind) Now I'm thinking climbing rose mixed with something. At my last house we had a white climber, it must be 40 years old now and is still there, flowered from June till December/January had a pinkish hue in the bud and was fragrant.  Never minded the rain, but did suffer a bit of black spot on the leaves. Is there a modern variety similar @Marlorena that you could recommend. I've noticed that the whites seem to suffer in the rain, is this a modern rose problem.

@purplerallim … no, not a modern problem, it affects most white and yellow roses... sometimes it's caused by botrytis, other times it's just natural ageing of the flowers..
Your trellis isn't that large, but if you want to try a scented white climber then I recommend 'Clarence House'... it has a nice citrus scent, white with a yellow centre with good health characteristics...  one of the late Amanda Beales best introductions... you might need an extra piece of trellis later on..

@Meomye ..Pat Austin is inclined to droop its blooms in the early years, so like Thomas a Becket and others of this type, best grown as a larger shrub with light pruning, or grown in a pot somewhat elevated …  I don't have this rose myself.. some people like it, others not so much because of this trait..

Won't be able to extend the trellis so need a non rampant climber @Marlorena 😁 Looking at "Clarence House" it's a bit too yellow for me, plus looking it up most seem to be out of stock. Need a more icy white I think, maybe a bush would be better that I could train?
