I had to google U3A - never heard of it. Not for me.
Wonder if wild edges got back to sleep......we'd better not shout.... I was slightly curmudgeonly yesterday when picking up my walking shoes, as the code numbers didn't match up. The poor women at Sainsbury's customer service were demented. Didn't help when a rude man delivering some parcels got shirty with one of them [he'd come to the wrong place so it was his fault] and was very miffed when the girl said he'd need to go out and round to the correct entrance. It was heaving down at that point, so there is some justice after all. We heard the whole thing, including his insult hurled at the girl. Ar***ole.Â
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
In Belgium, U3A is serious and involves attending classes at university. In the UK and France it's a way to keep retired folk active and socialising which is better and cheaper than having them vegetating at home and needing care. One friend in the UK has joined her group and started kurling - good fun and good exercise.Â
She also gets to go on lots of garden visits open only to groups and that's great for a keen gardener. They do other activities of no interest to her so she steers clear but enjoys the social lunches that allow everyone to get together now and then. Recently widowed so needs new friends and a reason to get out.
@wild edges shouldn't that be on the cheerful thread? Or are 90 mins not enough?
@Fairygirl - did you get the shoes?  Some people deserve to be soaked.
Got them @Obelixx, after the poor wumman [and myself] had to have a 'chat' with another wumman on eBay. That was ....difficult I should just have had them delivered to the house, but as I'm often out for a drive with fairylet, it can be a good idea, and normally there's no problem.Â
Re the U3A - I can see the value of these societies for some people, but I'm not good with organised activity of any kind. I'm like Grouch Marx - I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have meÂ

Same with us @Fairygirl. don't  want to be members of anything, we live a very frugal  solitary life here and love it that way. OHâs job is a very lonely one, you donât see anyone in Churchyards these days.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.Â
Well, I'm going to give it a go. There's a science group and an archaeology group that I fancy trying. The opera lady could sell snow to the Eskimos so I told her I'd come and have a look. No singing involved and only the good bits to listen to, I'm assured. That's the trouble with opera, all that waiting for the odd nugget.

That's not "trouble" that's building anticipation. I love Opera. I don't claim to any great knowledge but love it.
@Fairygirl - I learned to be a "joiner" when we moved to Belgium and I needed to make new friends and find things to do in the daytime after leaving job, friends and structured social and sporting life.  I now know what does work for me but I do also need alone time so am happy when OH disappears off to golf for a day or three - as long as he behaves and comes back in one piece!
Good luck with the opera B3. Personaly I find 2 hours of uncomfortable ears for 3 minutes of a good tune is too much.  I've learned what doesn't work for me. You will too.
