Sadly it is exactly what you suspect.  I don't personally approve of them, but they are scattered all over this state (my husband's state).  Whenever we hear a gun firing nearby out there in the country now, and it's not deer season in Fall, we know some gorgeous animal won't be having dinner that night.  It's so sad they raise the animals expressly for hunters to take home as trophies.  So sad.

This is definitely a thing.   Ours bring kitchen utensils!   They also play with footballs ( ie they puncture them).

The rural foxes around here obviously have better things to do, its the dogs (OK, Bill) who hides toys and balls in odd places. Sandra is obsessed with stones and frequently deposits veritable boulders on the rugs. I’m not really a one for slippers, so a nightmare in the morning when you are creeping around in the dark trying not to wake OH. The bloodcurdling yell when you stand on one somewhat spoils that effort.

The exotic animals we should be taking pot shots at are the ones holding the guns. Don't get that mentality at all. There is a lot of wild boar hunting around here, but they are an ever-proliferating menace and at least they are eaten nose-to-tail. Wild boar sausages - yum!

Central Texas is dealing with the same menace, Nollie.  We have seen them within 1 mile of our rural property, but not ON it (yet).  Wild hogs are such a problem here there are outfits you can hire to come kill them for you with pen-like fence traps.  They are eaten here as well, but I've not tasted wild pig myself.  They say it's good, but a bit tough, so grinding to sausage might be the best approach.  :)

I suppose they're much easier to kill if they walk right up to you.
Same as those brave hunters who shoot caged lions so that they can pose with their foot on it's neck.

When my son was only 4 he stepped on a butterfly on purpose as he knew no better.

I explained to him that we should " Not Kill Things as We Could Kill Things. "

Who ever started Humans and Animals off inserted some nasty behaviors   :'(
