Surprised we had normal rainfall for May..  certainly didn't feel like that.  Maybe the one or two torrential downpours we had added disproportionately to the total.
Bone dry again now..  hoping we get some kind of meaningful rain Saturday night or Sunday (forecast keeps changing!)

The regional areas are quite large so some parts may have got a lot more rain than others. It does say that Kent got half it's monthly rainfall over five days.

It's true that gardeners, and farmers, I imagine, look at distribution as much as amount. A torrential downpour may bring up the figures, but 30 dry days after feels and acts like drought.

It's true. In Feb north London had it's rain quotient in two days, so the whole month felt totally dry. Rain spread out across the month obviously affects soils very differently. A dowpour  in summer, on dry soils, is more likely to lead to bad flash flooding. We had that locally last July and the summer before that.

I'm planning on holding a major event here in late October.  Just been looking at the historic records for E. Suffolk.  October is the wettest month!  Oh well - better book an umbrella seller!
Gardening in East Suffolk on dry sandy soil.

    Lawn turning yellow now  :/
Everything bone dry. Had a downpour Saturday night, but 1 shower every 10 days is not really helping!

We haven't even had a shower! Grass looking very like yours. Oh well.

Maybe I should just go visit Beth Chatto's garden and fill the car with plants.

Rudbeckia fulgida "goldsturm" wilting. I gave them a good soaking just 5 days ago. They'll get another one tonight. Not young plants either - they went in more than a year ago.
In contrast, just behind them are 8-foot tall Verbena bonariensis that seem to be loving this weather
