It's hardly surprising the Yanks in particular get confused when trying to pronounce our place names.Ā The tend to pronounce things phonetically e.g. Dionne War-wick, then come over here to Gloucester (Gloster), Worcester (Wooster) so they've got it sussed - cester is pronounced 'ster', but then we catch 'em with Cirencester
Same down here with place names Holsworthy - Holsry. Ā Launceston - Lanson. Ā Woolfardisworthy - Woolsery.Ā
Don't forget Alfardisworthy, Olsery and who can forget what the now merged village of Bugworthy was shortened to?? In the mid 19th C the vicar insisted it was merged with Hartland as he was fed up being called the Vicar of Bugery. ( the role Dawn French turned down )
At least we have the decency to put translations on our road signs.
Ā Ā We do it too - but mainly further north. It pleases the touristsĀ - all that An Gearasdan and Sgurr Mahingummy.Ā Ā We have Tarbet and Tarbert @Dovefromabove. They're not very near each other either. We do it on purpose....
Near here is Strathaven which we pronounce Stray-ven, as you would do if you put an apostrophe in to replace 'tha'. I like the 'Vicar of Bugery' @Hostafan1. Can't see why he would be bothered by that at all...
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
7 vine weevils tonight and another that escaped. In other pest news one of my house plants is infested with fungus gnats. I've put out a sticky trap which has caught about 50 and I've probably squished about the same amount. We need more house spiders to help deal with them all. The soil is kept pretty dry so I've no idea why they've got so numerous.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
In Saffron Walden, I believe, thereās an old peopleās home with the address St. Peterās Close. And in Kent, just outside Maidstone, there is the Loose Womenās Institute. I donāt know whether thereās one in Ugley in Essex.

That's just too funny!Ā Do you think anyone ever goes to that Institute @Picidae ?Ā Ā
The toyed with "God's Waiting Room" but decided against it?
There's a road just round the corner from where I live which is all bungalows.Ā My old neighbour used to call that "God's Waiting Room" due to the age of most of the occupants.
