Spoken to my local GC expert in ferns/alpines and she said both plants can only be got from a specialist grower and best done in March, so looks like a thing for next year.
The 'expert' may not be quite so knowledgeable after all ; you tend to find this in garden centres which is why I try to avoid them . Most are bl***y useless anyway !
Over the years I've overheard the completely wrong advice spouting from the mouths of several 'experts' ; the poor customers unknowingly following it unquestioningly , gullibly believing that the staff there actually know something .
I just feel sorry for the plants often purchased with good intention , often carried away to some unknown doom !
Regarding your query purplerallim , that just proves the resilience of plants .
Most of my ferns flourish in normal garden loam in full-sunshine .
I saw a large healthy patch of Toadflax last Friday , growing in direct heat in a bed of sand on the South side of a sunny greenhouse . As well as the direct sunlight , it was also tolerating the added heat reflected from the glass !
What do you do when you see someone In front of you in the queue paying full price for a tray of etiolated plants with the last flowers they will ever produce bobbing about on the end if bare stems?
