Paul N, I listened very carefully, it was recorded, found JPs comment and chelsea (when I have visited very snobby) if you didnt have a problem with what he said thats marvelous.Gentleman in todays Daily Mail letter page, showed with a picture of his garden, said he also found Chelsea very snobby, I see someone has put on here, its nothing to do with gardening, just about making money.
Only person or thing about Chelsea that has annoyed me so far is that woman with the short white hair asking people 'what would you be if you wasn't a gardener?'
Being 'presenter' should at least mean knowing how to speak.
Nanny B - if you go looking for snobbery/prejudice/bigotry you will find it. If you go at something with an open mind you might just be pleasantly surprised instead of readily offended.
The Chelsea Flower Show began as a means of nurserymen and women and professional gardeners (usually from large estates) to show off their wares, be they well cultivated plants or new varieties and the arts of plant husbandry. RHS members include jobbing gardeners, professionally trained gardeners and horticulturalists, amateurs like us and professional breeders and designers. They have all sorts of backgrounds and all sorts of income levels.
Many of those early gardeners were employed by big estates owned by landed gentry; industrialists, bankers, royalty and they too liked to see and share their plants and plantsmanship and that's how it became part of the Social Calendar. It is ow used, quite rightly, by the RHS to raise awareness for all things gardening, to raise environmental concerns and possible solutions, to promote excellence in all things horticultural and, crucially, to raise money for the RHS which does so much to promote gardening for the many including community gardening, greening grey Britain, schools gardening, gardening for mental and physical health and also conservation.
It's great event which you can enjoy free on TV. What on earth is there not to like?

Sadly I think it's way too large for me to find space for one in my garden.
