Bio , hello , allotments cats 🐈 somebody from the committee had to do a video of the site and it’s been accepted , somebody now has to visit the site ! Moving very slowly I bought a rat 🐀 trap but have not caught any Horrendously windy at moment , really bad gales due Friday and lots of rain at moment
What a palaver re cat adopting GWRS. Meanwhile happy rats!! OK so I wanted some Silver Birch branches and twigs...I didn't ask the tree to actually fall down!!!...but away it came yesterday.. luckily nowhere near house and one of five..the others are OK so today O/H chopped it up and I now have some nice wood to use to edge beds etc. Polytunnel cover came off but no damage done. Hope all of you are alright. Needless to say no gardening done but if you have the urge. 19/20/21st Feb are Root Days and you should plant Shallots and Garlic if you haven't already and wish for early crops. Thin Turnips and Carrots sown 13-15th January. 22nd Feb Flower Day. Remove protection from around Artichoke bases and prick out Begonias sown 2-4th February.. Avoid Gardening n 23rd February before 11am due to noued lunar descending. 24th February Leaf Days Prune Evergreen hedges like Box and Topiary. Prick out Cabbages sown 4-6th February. Prepare potager if you are planning a new Asparagus Bed. Glad I spent this morning in garden rain and gales back with a vengeance this afternoon. Hope all is well with you Obelixx and chooks not blown away!! Happy Gardening.
Terrible storm yesterday, never left the house Only damage at home is a pot blown over & broken , have been out and bought o a replacement Went to allotment this morning before the rain came , netting on sprouts blown off completely , not that many so harvested them Netting nearly off Broccoli so re-netted them And 2 fence posts needed temporary repairs All in all not to bad
Hi Everyone. Despite fallen tree, garden survived recent storms really well and joy of joys what a beautiful weekend! Due to the Lunar Weather Report for March showing generally milder despite ongoing windy and rainy periods. I took the plunge and sowed Aubergines and Tomatoes 🍅 and Mangetout 'Nairobi' in the Polytunnel. yesterday. 30c in there plus one boiled cat sleeping happily in Orange Box!! How he could put up with that temperature I don't know! Very miffed when I opened door and windows. I have held some seed back in case this early sowing turns out to be a disaster but here are the predictions for March which bearing in mind the accuracy of January and February, I am going to go along with. 1-9th Some rain forecast on the 5th but otherwise warm and sunny but breezy. 10-17th Wind and Rain
18-23rd warming up nicely but still windy with wet spells. 25-31st Much drier and cooler due to stiff winds. But sunny in the South and West. 30-31st Mixed weather with showers. This year I thought that we could integrate what you can do if you have a Smallholding every day according to the Lunar Calender..So I have added the Biodynamic recommendations for Poultry/Bees/Livestock and Cereal Crops. Plus best periods for Cheese Jam. Cordial and Bread making. Please let us have your thoughts and recommendations from your Gardening Clubs etc on this Thread. Everyone's experiences and tips for Smallholders will be welcomed. 1st March Moon ascending in Capricorn so Root Days. Potager..Sow some Carrots and Radishes. I am sticking with 'Torchon' Carrots that I can grow successfully in Orange Boxes lined with Newspaper and filled with Compost. Permaculture - Plant Garlic. Shallots and Onions 2-3rd March Flower Days. Permaculture - Sow Oats and the first Lentils. Potager. Sow Cauliflowers and Broccoli in seed trays plus Impatiens and Marigolds can be started off now. 4/5 & 6th March Leaf Days. Potager. -Sow in a Nursery Bed Lettuce. Spinach and Dandelion. Permaculture -Check condition of stored Fruit. Plant Kiwi. Grapevines and Figs. Cut out old growth from Bush Fruit and Hazel. 7th March Moon ascending in Aries so Fruit and Seed Days. Potager.. If you can maintain a temperature of 20-25c Sow Cucumbers and Melons in Greenhouse but keep them out of direct sunlight. 8/9 & 10th March Root Day's. No gardening recommended before 12.25pm as Noeud ascending. Potager. In nursery bed sow Leeks for Autumn harvest. Sow Turnips outside. On 10th no gardening recommended after 4.55pm as Moon apogée. Permaculture..plant Jerusalem Artichokes and earth up plus cover Dandelions with good layer of straw to start blanching. Well I think that will do for now. Please let me know how you feel about adding Permaculture to this Thread. Because I have noted that many allotments have started to add chickens to their plots, I felt it might work well hand in hand. Happy Gardening!
Bio , thanks for update Nice day yesterday so went to allotment , O/H burn all the prunings Unfortunately more fence posts broken by last weeks gales , so replaced 4 and temporary repairs done to others Will need to buy some more Just cut lawns today Several plot holders have chickens and 1 has quails , unfortunately there is Bird flu in the Area , one Lady who is French , her chickens 🐓 have gone !
Starting to gets buds forming on Hawthorn Hedges , always a good sign of spring coming Happy gardening everybody
Your French lady must have eaten them!!! I caught a fox attacking my neighbours cockerel..shooed it away and told neighbour. Bird was badly mangled so she killed it and later when I popped round for a coffee, there it was boiling away in the pot with its feet hanging out! She asked me to stay for supper but I declined gracefully!!. Just sowed Broad Beans in pots and Peas in trays this afternoon. Made Irish Teabread to sell at the Market tomorrow...kitchen smells of mixed fruit and spices. Cosy!! Had tea and crumpets outside yesterday. Love these short warm periods on run up to Spring. Light changing too...always a good sign.
Hello group! I am new to gardening by the phases of the moon and biodynamics and I've read this thread with much interest. I am located in the USA and over here it seems most gardeners follow the Old Farmer's Almanac which uses the tropical calendar for planting by the moon, which differs slightly from Thun's. I bought the Thun 2022 biodynamic planting guide so I can follow along with you. I have one question though. People here say the signs Aries and Leo are killing signs and no planting/seeding should be done under them. They are also both fruiting signs and I thought tomato and pepper seeds should be started in fruiting signs when the moon is waxing. Is this killing sign belief true following Maria Thun's calendar? Thank you for your help! Looking forward to continued learning
Welcome Val_entine99...when you say 'killing' signs can you elaborate? Can we assume that you mean no gardening recommended when the Moon is in front of these signs?
