Bio , candles , we tend to buy them in the sales as we see them , so all sorts & sizes Had a good frost this morning , Greenhouse at 0-00 , so at least it stopped it freezing I do have a paraffin heater but not used it for a few years as winters have not been to bad Lovely sunny day , now 7-00 degrees and it should be with us for a few days , no rain for at least a week , so have been watering pots Hoping to go allotment tomorrow , dig up some leeks , pick sprouts and some fruit tree pruning Happy marmalade processing 🍊
I had a good afternoon at the Allotments, the Sun actually broke through, the ground has finally dried enough for a bit of digging. Best of all I harvested the first of the PSB, which we ate tonight- lovely.
Well lucky you didn't make the effort to come up here for the chandeleurs Obelixx..hardly any exhibitors which was bitterly disappointing. Seems th COVID Regs attached to visiting and exhibiting were so stringent that many stayed away. This Ormicron variant B is having a big impact around us. Lots of children going into hospital. All regs staying in place until end February. BUT and here is joyful news The Spring Flower Fair at Chateau Pommerio in Trevenuec Brittany is taking place Easter weekend and we have been invited to exhibit again. The plants men there are brilliant..the prices realistic and Barnhaven Primroses are local to there so I can buy some more plants from them, as so much better to see the colour choices live rather than in a brochure. Much warmer today but ground too wet to do much with. Our handsome Robin in the back garden has found himself a very pretty slim wife and a pair of Starlings appear to be inseperable canoodling above the bird feeder in the Silver Birch. Our resident pigeon who lost his wife last year is still mourning her.. no new mate in sight yet whilst others have paired successfully. There is a lot of fighting going on amongst the Magpies beside the Fishing Lake....load of unrepeatable verbal!! Bought a lovely Cauliflower this morning at the Market for 1euro (total failure at growing my own) we have loads of parsley in the garden so Roast Chicken tomorrow with Cauliflower in Parsley Sauce..home grown golden turnips. Saw the first snowdrops this morning en route to Market..no idea where ours are, no sign f them though plenty of Darts coming out now.
Hello , just noticed the other day snow drops coming out in garden , such a delight A bit early for daffs hear Hoping to spend Sunday & Monday at allotment as weather forecast is good
Nearly all Covid restrictions now finished but still being careful
Hi everyone, cleared chervil apart from 3 bushy plans from Raised Bed. What a super Green Manure! Earth underneath black and crumbly so dug leafy growth in and popped in last of Onion Sets. Lovely w/e so weeded Strawberry boxes and generally tidied up around non gardening hours. Lunar Weather prediction for February shows stormy weather for the first fortnight...I sort of expected that because when we have Spring tides here, usually windy and stormy. Between 1-7th some places North and East can expect snow. Cold and high winds.8-15th very changeable with high winds and rain.16-22nd Sunny spells but rain and wind not far away. 23-28th much milder but still windy. Wet in the North and East but Southern and Western areas can expect sunny days. Looks as though we shall be glad when this month is over!! Still lots to do in the greenhouse and under cover especially if temperatures don't drop too low. Surprised to see thermometer registering 16c in the polytunnel yesterday so things are looking up☺️☺️.Farming Today interesting this morning. A UK Clematis grower is thrilled that Brexit has done him good, with more orders from Garden Centres for his homegrown plants, another one not so happy as can't get labour plus having to pay excessively high prices for plug plants from Holland due to admin costs ..delivery etc.
Hi everyone..here is The Lunar Calender for the next few days. 2-3rd Feb Flower Days with Moon ascending in front of Aquarius. If your greenhouse has reached the lofty levels of 20-22c sow some begonia semperflorens and pelergoniums (as opposed to geraniums) Do not cover the begonia seed but leave in full sunlight and keep slightly damp. If your greenhouse has struggled and just reached 15-18c Then sow some Cauliflowers instead. 4/5-6th Feb Leaf Days Under cover sow some Lettuce and Batavia. Sow some Cabbages. Watercress Rocket. Parsley and Chervil remembering to keep them well covered with fleece at night laid over the seed bed or Frames. 7-8th Feb. Moon ascending in front of Aries so Fruit Days. Sow some round as opposed to wrinkled Peas. Mange-tout and Broad Beans. Earth them up well when they sprout. Saw Dahlias/Lilies and Gladioli already for sale in the shops today. Still planning how to fill some empty spaces so a bit early for me to buy. Gave up on Gladioli years ago as just too tall and floppy for me with our strong coastal winds. I have yet to find a dwarf one I like.. but I do love the colours of the giant ones. Happy Gardening.
Hi everyone. Hard frost this morning -1c..cats refused to go outside ...first time this Winter all four of them have stayed indoors all night! Finished preparing Seville Oranges and now have 8 lovely solid Wooden Orange Boxes to grow my Courgettes and Spring Onions in, plus perhaps some French Beans. 12/13th Feb are Flower Days so divide snowdrops in the green and take cuttings from Fuchsias/Chrysanthemums and Pelergoniums. Prick out Cauliflowers sown 6/7th January under heat. 14/15th Feb Moon descending in front of Cancer so Leaf Days. Plant new Hedges. 16/17th Feb Full Moon 3.56pm on 16th. Fruit Days. If it's not frosty prune Plums and other stone fruit trees, cutting out any bushy growth and crossing branches to allow airflow through centres. Prune Bush Fruit . Kiwis and Vines. Take cuttings from Currants and Gooseberries. Open greenhouses and polytunnels around midday until 4pm if sunny to create airflow and to dry out damp surfaces like wooden seed benches. Keep feeding wild birds. Happy Gardening 😊😊
Bio , thanks for update I grow Gladioli at allotment under 2 pear & 1 plum trees , don’t stake them individually but do tie them up , nice cut flowers for home Broad beans growing nicely under clouches , still picking sprouts & curly kale Cleared a bed for ready for new strawberries 🍓 Nearly got all the pruning done ,just got gooseberries to do Not much rain but lots of strong icy winds
Miserable here again today with high winds. Ground sodden again. Glad I have Raised Beds but all full of green manure .shallots and onions. So only left with corridor of bare ground which I have left for Potatoes to go in and too soon for that. I say 'bare ground' but actually it is where I have lifted spare raised beds for storage to stop the wood rotting and the soil is wonderful. I have let weeds cover it over Winter so nutrients not washed away. In front there is a row of Dahlias and behind a set of Raised Beds, so should look nice in Summer. I have pruned Budlea and Roses, but can't do much more at the moment. Wallflowers just beginning to come out and at last we have snowdrops! Loads of Starlings in garden. Wonderful watching their flight in the evening. Must have had a cloud of around 200 rising from the field next door on Sunday..Bit like Hitchcock's 'Birds' which was a bit alarming!! as they came straight towards me in garden then swept upwards into the Oak trees, the noise of their wings was like a thunderclap. Very emotive. At last my lonely pigeon has found a wife. I thought he had found one the other week but a bossy youngster came along and tempted her away. Throwing the last of our apples out on the lawn for the blackbirds..too soft now to eat but they appreciate them. Any news on the new cats GWRS? My gang are catching mice every day now despite the weather they seem to find them. Glad it's windy, Silver Birch should lose a few more branches which I can pop to one side to use as Pea Sticks and covering for new seed beds anti birds and hopeful pussycats.
