TV presenters are NOT Gods, discuss.....

They present TV programmes, and may or may not be experts in the subject they present.  They are not 'legends' living or otherwise.  They have been fortunate in being in the right place at the right time, and there are probably people out there far more qualified to do the job but have never had the opportunity.

:) presenting is a different skill from gardening. TV needs presenters. Presenters are necessary to provide something to argue about here

Presenters seem to be needed as targets to throw things at. It seems a good rule of thumb not to say anything online that you would not say to someone's face. Or say things that you would not wish to be said of yourself. Imagine hundreds of people slagging you off with gusto. And gathering for the purpose.

At the moment BBC radio Four seem to be having a campaign to prove that the BBC are not biased.

To be honest, I don’t mind the interruptions if the person being interviewed is trying to manage the process and avoid answering what is asked. Politicians are experts in such evasion.

Nor do I mind the BBC making an effort to have presenters who reflect the diversity in the country. Sometimes, though, I feel balance can lead to a diminution in quality. Radio 4’s latest episode of the News Quiz was a case in point; I thought it was very poor.

As for presenters being Gods, that’s a bit harsh. So long as they convey the subject with enthusiasm, clarity and bring out the best in experts if they are not experts themselves then I feel my licence fee is not wasted. Monty Don does a great job, in my view. I am not bothered that he is not a trained gardener. John Arlott was no cricketer but, for many, he was the doyen of commentators. I bet Will Gompertz can’t paint, act or write plays but he writes about the Arts with elegant accessibility.

I agree with you KT53 when you say these people are lucky - right place, right time. I don’t begrudge them their good fortune. That’s fine by me. Sometimes the ‘talent’ is lost on me. I find nothing of value in Keith Lemon’s work, for example, but others like him so I’ll just have to shut up.

Finally, just one contentious observation. People get annoyed by the salaries paid to presenters, managing directors and so on and I agree with KT53 that there are many others out there who could do the job equally well. With professional footballers, however, there most definitely are not loads out there who could take on the role. They perform week in week out under the scrutiny of fans and the cameras. If they’re not up to the task they’re out. Meanwhile they are paid what the market will stand. That’s what comes from living in a market economy.

I sort of agree except that media has skewed the market. A surgeon earns less than a musician because he can only operate on one person at a time. In a market economy, the value of the surgeon's work to the individual should mean the surgeon is paid more - life saving medicine being more valuable than a song. But because the musician can sell to millions of people that have never been in the same room as him, he earns less per person but far far more in total. If footballers were paid what the 'market' of people going to stand in the stadium and watch him play could support, I'd have no quibble. But he gets squillions of pounds because what he does is exploitable by advertisers.

Something of value gets lost on TV.

There's a difference between presenters, journalists (Monty being a journalist) and news readers and 'celebrities'. Some presenters like to think of themselves as celebrities and expect me to be interested in their lives when they aren't presenting. I'm not.

From the viewpoint of the team I support I would suggest that there are many, many out there who could do a lot better than the current lot. :D
I should clarify, that I'm not accusing most presenters of themselves thinking they are gods, but some of their supporters would appear to have that view.  There are a few presenters who do seem to think that being classed as a god would be several steps down from where they see themselves.

Sadly 50000 people did not want to watch me working in ICU, so I did not get a footballers salary.
How can you lie there and think of England
