Allotment Gardening

  • My garden bin was emptied on Friday. As it was full was outside pulling poppies and putting them in a black bag ready for an empty bin. The lorry came while I was working so I stopped to pass the time of day with the binman, he saw the full bag of garden waste and said let me put that in the empty bin and then empty it again, as he gestured for the bag the driver leaned out of the cab and shouted you can't do that you are on camera and will get in trouble.
I thought we were not making our recycling targets,  maybe this is the reason, no curbside pickups.🙄
  • A full day at the plots yesterday, what a difference a week makes. Last Tuesday it was too hot to move let alone work. Started the big clear up, removed spent rows of peas beans etc plus a lot of weeds. In the last week I have put out some late lettuce & more dwarf french beans, if it stays mild we may sneak another quick harvest.

  • Allotment today after being away for a long weekend, removed all of the fencing/netting from the sweetcorn bed, the corn was harvested a week ago so the birds can have what's left, the corn has been frozen and is unbelievably sweet straight from the cob uncooked. Removed the gooseberry cage to put away for the winter, this years gooseberries were a waste of time big and juicy but very sour, they are usually beautifully sweet (Hinnonmaki yellow) if they get some sun when they are ripening. Kale and brussels are looking good and the fencing/netting will go around them before winter sets in. Leeks haven't been in long but are now growing and I don't want to harvest them until the end of the year anyway. I have a good showing of carrots which will be lifted to store and parsnips which again I don't harvest until winter, if they haven't gone tough or got fly damage. Tomatoes in greenhouse have been good this year and the ones that I harvested today were remarkably bright red, I cut the leaves right back to allow the sun to ripen those left on the plants. Runner beans growing well and need harvesting twice a week I'm freezing them as there are too many to eat. I have three melon from two plants waiting to ripen, quite a few butternut squash still quite small they might be ok if we get a few weeks of sun on them. I planted one pumpkin which grew into a big sprawling plant with loads of male flowers but no females. Raspberry canes producing well now wet cool weather seems to suit them.

Hello , Autumn raspberries and red French beans have gone over while on holiday
Sweet corn growing well but not ready yet
Main crop potatoes 🥔 , the rain has washed the soil off some of them and lots have gone green , never happened before !
Only 1 pumpkin and pick it , has the stem has dried
    All lettuce has bolted
    Lots to do

  • @GWRS just a question. I have just taken out the last of the potatoes and decided to use the space over winter by planting winter cabbage and purple sprouting broccoli plants. Will they need any protection from the weather over winter? As I have never planted a crop over winter just wondered what they will need. Thanks in advance @GWRS , oh and btw to anyone else I'm only singling GWRS out as he lives in my area so knows our weather conditions. 😁

Hello  Purplerallim , I do grow broccoli 🥦 and I cover it with fleece to start with . Buy the time the bad weather comes in Jan/Feb it is usually big enough to survive , also buy then the fleece is in ribbons any way
I successfully grow autumn planted broad beans which I put a cloche over until they are pushing it off and buy then big enough to survive
Did you buy your Winter Cabbage 🥬 or grow it from seed ?
Do let us known how you get on
Hoping to get to allotment this afternoon

  • Bought both at Anwick GC , just in off the delivery.  They have been asked for more winter veg than usual so ordered early. Luckily for me as two GC in Lincoln weren't stocking any. Both are about 6inches tall and nice and green, planted Sunday and are still looking good after the heavy rain. Thanks for the help @GWRS as  total novice at winter growing.😁
