Hello Zoomer missed you am still here not getting notifications still hope you are getting better after opp - not tried growing that way bales
Been to allotment planting some potatoes today red duke of york and looking after the chickens lot warmer today still a few to plant of a main crop, over the last week been getting my shed put up in garden with help - not far off just can't get the roofing felt tried looking online most places say not home delivery
some people about even one that was not that great to us the other day moaning about us having two people and said he took a photo anyway - like he went around a few plot holders moaning - some said things back then said to others he has posted photo of them on the web - just because it said on notice consider working plot on own - it was fine we had done nothing wrong still from same house hold - very stressful
GWRS we are not allowed bonfires while this virus is going on now we all had email from council Friday or people sent a letter in post - I guess they not got them yet as someone our end turned up today not been there a while and started having a bonfire and one other plot holder said can't have a bonfire I guess as I heard him say you can't even go to the dump
Gardengirl , I wonder why you can’t have bonfires 🔥?
We are going to plot tomorrow , o/h is going to re- stain main shed and I’ve a list of lots of little jobs to do While we are on lockdown and the weathers reasonable we are doing jobs outside and have left the decorating that we intended to do for the time being Stay safe and happy gardening
I have ben planting potatoes too got one lot of lates in (Picasso) just the Sarpo Mira to get in. Ground has gone very dry again last nights rain did nothing. One extreme to the other.
I get the bonfire ban, due to the smoke, during lockdown an open window for some maybe the only fresh air they get if they cant get out, we are fortunate in that we can go to an open space. My rubbish can wait till life after lockdown.
I've reduced my visits to approx 1hr for exercise, and now cycle there.
GWRS can't have bonfires cause of people exercising thing and cause people wanting windows open - even though my plot not near houses - more clean air then
Allotment Boy soil has gone from too wet to a lot dryer car park better
Before the shut down council dropped off 2 piles of road scalpings 1 pile really in one middle bit and sometimes can get parked in as someone then puts car in drive way bit, so over the week or two I have bucket up and moved over into smaller piles ready to be raked out
I personally (and this isn’t a dig at anyone!!) don’t like allotment bonfires and would never make one. Probably not helped by having to still be clearing up the mess left by the previous owners bonfires!
The other plot holders are very pro fire though. “We just set fire to the whole plot when we first got it!”
Just seems very against the whole concept of gardening. Why burn off 90% of the nutrients in the material. Our plot was incredibly overgrown but most of that material was left in big piles which have all flattened down to nothing now - just broken down and improved the soil and was mulching and suppressing weeds while it happened.
Because we’ve got a fairly large plot we’ve not got a problem with space to dispose of things. Rubbish goes in the bin, weeds go in compost bins, woody stems get chipped, logs go in the logpile (bug hotel)
I can understand what people are saying about bonfires 🔥 and agree, a couple of people had them in there gardens in the village yesterday and not pleasant However at the allotment you can only have bonfires in fire bins and can’t burn plastic . I have a particularly a fire pit I put the the ashes in and as the allotment are in farm land there Is quite a distance to the nearest Village so as not to cause a problem
Traditionally gardeners burned diseased material. I can see the logic behind that. We have a small fire bin for the purpose. We are rural and still have people around with wood burners as heating. Without any spoken agreement, we have a season for it during the Autumn locally. No way I would use it on a bright sunny day when people are outside or have washing out, windows open. It is used in the overcast damp days in Autumn.
Have been to the plot on the last two mornings after giving it a rest for a week, no where near as many people gardening as there was before the allotment officer put out his notice about people over 70 and with underlying health problems not going on the site, also those who must travel by car, one couple drive 40 miles round trip to allotment on our site I couldn't believe it when I found that out. So got some more ground prepared and sowed Carrots, Beetroot, Spring Onions and radish. My ground has dried on top but still wet under the surface so the plants which I put in the other week are all looking healthy, I believe rain is forecast for later in the week so that will get the seeds going, will visit again tomorrow and get some more ground squared up. The Gooseberry bush will soon need its protective mesh frame erecting which is now in the greenhouse and that will need clearing out and weeding ready for the tomatoes to go in next month probably. Our site only allow bonfires between October and the end of March so no burning there, although I haven't had a fire for a few years got fed up coming home stinking of smoke and I compost everything anyway.

Stinky, CO2, carcinogens, wasting material, damaging soil surface (if done directly on top)

What’s even left to burn?
