    something like this perhaps?
    Devon.
  • I wonder if this type of thing would be achievable?

possible, but would you want something that ugly ? and it'd still cast a lot of shade
    Devon.
  • Lol! Well that’s down to taste! I quite like it! The cone feels a bit formal for me... garden otherwise has evolved to be a bit cottage garden style & bit Mediterranean...

lots to think about - thanks everyone for all the ideas and information- it’s lovely to know what it is too!

Yew pillars work well with 'cottagey' IMHO... but it might look strange as a singleton.

Perhaps a sort of tiered thingy would make sense as a lone specimen?

Mediterranean gardens are full of topiary just look at the great gardens of Italy, for example.
    Devon.
  • I like the pillars although agree a lone one maybe not... yes maybe tiered...I like the curves...  also cloud pruning looks interesting too.. that’s Japanese isn’t it?
I like the airy and free feel of it...

I’m not concerned about mixing styles - or labels-  more about how it all feels together- I guess like fusion cooking!

Hostafan1: My version of Mediterranean is more Cyprus than Italy as my fam are from there and i know it well. It is more like floriferous pots on the patio, jasmine, vines, olives etc.  Which is how we’ve done our patio. Should I amend my usage of the term to mean the formal gardens of Italy only?

    thanks everyone!
