Can a raise the crown of this yew?

hi!

we have an inherited yew (I think)
weve changed a lot around it but would like to keep this Bush/tree/yew.
It blocks late day sunlight so one idea is to raise its crown and turn it into more of a tree shape.

Is this possible? I dont want to kill it!  Seems like it should be but have never attempted anything like it before.

thanks! 😀

A picture would help a lot. But Yew is very tolerant of being pruned in general.

  • Could you post a picture of it?

IMHO , if you were to turn it into a tree shape, it'd look like a lollipop ie horrible.
Why not clip it to a cone or pyramid ?

Rather than crown lifting I would go along a topiary route.  Yes is very versatile and could be quickly trained to say a cone, spiral or pyramid shape.  That way the highest and shading parts would be narrower.  Yew can be cut hard back and will regrow.

    Yes it’s a yew.  :)
Trust me it’s going to look hideously ridiculous if you ‘raise the crown’.

It really isn’t big enough to block much light ... what it needs is shaping and regular clipping to give it clear form and structure
and then it’ll be a great thing to have in your garden.

Just google ‘clipped yew images’ for some ideas.

Im jealous, I’d love to have inherited a yew tree when we came here. 😊

  •  thanks everyone- will investigate. Does anyone know or have an idea of the type of yew it may be? It has little brown ball type seeds (?) Under the leaves. Would be nice to know...
