One key correlation with reduction in population growth is the education of women. If women know how to avoid pregnancy, they generally do, especially if infant mortality is also reduced by better healthcare. Therefore the rate is high in sub-saharan Africa where healthcare is poor, and access to education limited and also in a few other countries where education of women is highly restricted by religious doctrine.

Globally the birth rate (per head of population) is falling and has been consistently since the 1950s. The increased survival rate arguably has more impact, as more babies survive long enough to reproduce. The birth rate per head of population has been decreasing but the surviving population has increased dramatically so the actual rate of population increase has been exponential in the 20th century. It's slowing again now though.

The UK birth rate has been less than 2 since the end of the Baby Boom years - late 1960s so there'd be no point in a 2 child rule. Some restructuring of child support benefits might make sense so having more than 2 children is discouraged and not encouraged. That's a tricky one though.

The whole of southern England has been afflicted with being London's dormitory. HS2 spreads that pain a little farther.

The upside is that businesses based in Birmingham will be able to work effectively in London without having to actually relocate, so it spreads the wealth a little. Whether that keeps up with the spread of the commuter costs is less clear. If the experience down here is indicative, the further out you go from London, the greater the discrepancy you see between local incomes and house prices as the commuters move in but local businesses are too far away to capitalise on better market access.

Hasn't the government just banned gas boilers in new homes from 2025 to be completely banned at a later date, you can't say that the government aren't doing anything about global warming. What doesn't make sense is Caroline Lucas wanting to restrict people flying to once a year or even once every five years, which I'm not against if it is needed, but then saying that people could fly more often if they paid a hefty tax. Where's the equality in that the rich can fly, the less well off can stay at home and be green? Everyone has the right to demonstrate but there comes a limit where enough is enough, as we live in a democracy the people who are blocking the centre of London and Edinburgh should stand for election and get change through the ballot box not take part in pointless demonstrations.

I think that most of those demonstrating in London should get a job and stop spongeing off the taxpayers.

If all the idiots sitting on their fat a*ses disrupting life for others, and gluing themselves to trains, got out into the country and actually did something positive it might help.

Will all the demonstrators walk home ?? I doubt it they will probably catch a train, drive a car, or maybe even fly how very green of them

Maybe those idiot Suffragettes should have done the same and stayed at home instead of disrupting life for others.....

Emma Thompson flies in from LA to join the rally and climb on to the bandwagon sorry I mean pink boat. She could have saved the diesel that the taxi burnt getting her from the airport to central London if she had joined the anti flying demo at the airport.

The irony of flying umpteen thousand miles to protest about climate change will most definitely be lost on a luvvie like her.  The only thing that matters is getting in the press again.  Maybe she can't get decent parts any more.
