Female flowers have a tiny fruit behind the flower, sometimes this can grow quite big even without pollination. Male flowers have a plain stalk. Female flowers need to be pollinated by pollen from a male flower. It can be from a different plant or from the same plant (and it can be some other variety or even some other squash as long as it is the same species - cucurbita pepo, it won't work with cucurbita maxima pumpkins or cucumbers). Sometimes, when you have only one plant, the flowers can miss each other. It works better to have at least two plants. Sometimes courgettes don't grow and rot small even when pollinated, the plants can have a mind of their own. It can be a variety dependent, I had one which produced tens of tiny ones but never a single good sized one.
