@Mr. Vine Eye what does it smell like? I’m very fragrance driven with my choice of roses but I have read good things about Kew Gardens. I don’t think I saw it at the DA nursery though for some reason..
I've been banging on about Kew Gardens for years, just about everywhere on the internet... it deserves the very best spot in anybody's garden... but you've got to appreciate this kind of rose... not everyone would, but it should be thought of as an essential shrub for the border, not only a rose... a light musky scent, you wouldn't buy it for that... thornless..
8 x 8 foot easily, if wanted...
@Nollie I see what you mean.. you wouldn't know that was Lady Emma would you? I've never seen it like that..
...I should add, I think the more one talks about a particular rose, the more it can put some people off... familiarity breeds contempt... we like to discover roses ourselves and find our own way with them rather than have someone keep telling us... so I don't talk about it so much these days ..lol... but every year I hope they breed another one like it... Tottering is similar, but not as good so far...
I was quite surprised after seeing Tottering-by-gently in our garden centre how big the blooms are. Like almost negatively surprised, not sure if I like the combination of the style of the rose and the size of the blooms. I think it needs to be let to grow big and that it would look lovely then. Kew Gardens... I am sure it's a really good rose but I would prefer a pure white. I don't want a white and yellow mix in my front garden because I have stricter colour scheme there. I would love it in my back garden but don't have space... and also want other roses than DAs. It's a rose that's on my wish list (and Tottering too) but there are always other roses I want more.
What you describe, Marlorena, about the familiarity, yes, I have it with some roses. Mostly with famous OGRs like Souvenir de la Malmaison. Everyone has it, everyone loves it, I want to try it... but everyone has it so where's the fun in that. Also, counting all the "must have" and "everyone should have" roses, one could easily get close to something like 20
@edhelka … if you want a similar rose that's more white, and also low thorn, consider 'Sally Holmes'... it would have been my choice if there was no Kew Gardens...
...sometimes it's nice to try a rose everyone has to see if you can grow it better... with 'SdlM'.. as Peter Beales once said, it can look fantastic one day and horrid the next...
….a very similar rose I tried and failed with is 'Tipsy Imperial Concubine'.. intriguing name... but the blooms refused to open for me, even in the greenhouse... this is as far as one of them got... I gave up...
But Sally is a climber while Kew Gardens is a tall shrub. Or do you think they could both be grown as a climber or a shrub? Maybe a shrub with some support?
...oh a tall shrub for us here, I would expect 6 x 6 easily, perhaps more if one has the room but we can always prune... bred in England, so suited to our climate that way... ignore what you might see from California or warm climates because it grows massive in such locations... ...a rose from the 1970's by an amateur breeder, it's a much overlooked rose in this Austin age we live in...
...perhaps I should get one myself... I have a space suddenly available, so might give it a whirl... I notice Austins go with 5 x 5 but Beales have it as 4 x 2 foot yet they show a photo of it that must be at least 5 x 6 foot... which is more like it..

Kew Gardens is ideal for any situation in my view!
