...allotments are great places to grow roses... open to the sun, no shade, you can grow some fabulous roses usually, and big ones too...
...I've only grown a rose from seed once, but I'll try again this winter... it's best to stratify the seeds for 6 weeks in the fridge I think.. rubbing off the jelly like substance from the seed and wrapping in slightly moist tissue, then in a plastic bag, and leave in fridge... some people say the winter stratifies them anyway... then sow in Spring..
...if the seedling rose does not flower in the first year, then generally it won't be a repeat bloomer... mine didn't, and as is often the case it didn't the 2nd year either, so I got rid of it.. my seedling was open pollinated from 'Wild Rover'... I used 3 seeds, one didn't germinate, 2 did, but one died... seedlings from this rose usually turn out to be some shade of orange... in most cases they are pink, this is the default colour in roses... but sometimes you can get a yellow or white one, even similar to its parent..
...seedling just emerged... it grew into a climbing rose which did not bloom first year..
..2nd year, now 8 foot or so, and very early into leaf.. but it did not bloom this summer either so I lost patience and it's gone..
...best of luck with yours.. but don't expect any Austin like roses to appear..
@Marlorena, since you are looking at Rosen Tantau, I wonder if you are familiar with either of the following roses, or know of how they behave?
There are some comments from 2015 on helpmefind about Soul getting rust and stem canker (then stem dieback), so was wondering if those would rule it out as an option. Plus there is no picture of the overall shrub, so no idea if it has a good habit or not...
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Nollie … I just put a post on your other thread... Soul has a similar look to Ivor's Rose which I mentioned... I've seen Soul sold locally here but have resisted picking it up... I don't know the other one... so I can't help you on those two really.. 'Gospel' looks nice as well, and is another I've been wanting...[sold under the silly name of 'Proper Job' in this country]….
My order with Tantau, when I get around to it will be.. 'Modern Art'...'Wildberry'... 'Bailando'... 'Marietta' and 'Pacific Blue'...
Thanks Marlorena, goodness, where are you going to put them all?! I am working my way through your list on my other thread and will come back to you on that, but Ivor’s Rose looks perfect!

Boscobel, pretty colour. Smells very strongly like liqourice to me!
Was having another look at those Corinne's choice ones.
I was going to buy PAOK but something put me off. I'm not sure what.
Does Graham Thomas have a scent? I liked the flowers but I couldn't smell anything at all.
@Nollie … oh I put them in pots and then see if I like them or not..
..this is a Tantau rose 'Lavender Ice'... in a pot within a pot.. very disease resistant..
.. a beautiful bloom on 'Octavia Hill' today...
... freshly cut 'Munstead Wood' 'cos it smells so good...
