I was wondering. The dahlias i planted in the ground were experimental, bordering on sacrificial. I've always grown them in contain before. If they get mollicated by molluscs, will the tubers be as viable next year as the ones that managed to flower this year?
Astrania, I lost a lot of dahlias last year in raised beds. This year I have gone for metre high pots and they have been fine. I do nightly slugs hunts too. Mine are just about to pop. Bishop of Llanduff and Arabian Night (not quite sure).
It seems I cannot link your name to tag you as your name starts with an *. If you would like to be tagged it might be an idea to take the first asterisk out of your screen name.
The early shoots of my Bishop of Llandalf got munched as I was too slow off the mark with protective measures. I watered and fed the stump then put one of those rigid mesh food dome thingies over it, pushed into the ground and its now growing away again fine. You could try that @B3 so it gets some new leaves to feed the tubers, even if it doesn’t get around to flowering.
Plus this is my lethal weapon of choice, 100% mollusc-proof, a thick ring of chunky volcanic rock/gravel stuff around the plant. Still have to watch out for the cunning abseilers from nearby plants, tho...
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Will keep an eye on Arabian Night and let you know if it seems popular with pollinators - there was a bee on it yesterday, but it might not have got anything out of it. I have tonnes of salvia, agastache, nepeta and a load of other good food stuff so not too bothered about the odd one that isn’t.
You’re going to have a fab display there...
How has arabian night been with the bees?
My Bishop of Llandaff that I bought late in the year has just started flowering. I can see what all the fuss is about, pictures don't do such a piercing scarlet justice.

Hopefully more flowers to consistently appear in August.
