Good luck with the dahlias, Harry. The first of my first time growing dahlias in pots, now in the ground, has just flowered. Its ahead of the the one dahlia I planted in the ground last year, so I’m chuffed with that!

Have you put any into large pots for a display or was it purely to get them started?

Just to get them started, pots get too hot unless they are in the shade and dry out too quickly for me. Here’s my first, Arabian Night, splattered with dusty rain but otherwise a good colour. Do post some pics of yours when they come up!

I do like Arabian Night but insist on buying plants for pollinators where I can, looking at that though suggests it'd be fine for the bees despite information to the contrary?

Well that's me potted up all but 3 tubers now, amassing a fair collection of larger pots now, not the cheapest!

Just hope this works out ok and the compost doesn't get water logged before the plants have enough time to really get going.

Will keep an eye on Arabian Night and let you know if it seems popular with pollinators - there was a bee on it yesterday, but it might not have got anything out of it. I have tonnes of salvia, agastache, nepeta and a load of other good food stuff so not too bothered about the odd one that isn’t.

You’re going to have a fab display there...

    Fingers crossed.

The B&Q peat-free compost seems to hold on to a lot of moisture with all this rain, hopefully not too much...

I tried dahlias for the first time this year but as soon as they started to get shoots the slugs and or snails have eaten them all 😡😡😡 they were in pots I’ve put them on the compost heap now and given up☹️

Where did you keep them? I kept mine in the conservatory so there was no chance for the slugs to get them when they were young.

I planted 3 in the ground fairly close to each other a couple of days ago. The lower leaves on one look like a doily. The others gave been left alone . It seems that some varieties are tastier than others.
