I thought I posted this yesterday...

Marlorena,  the seedlings I have to say I am very happy, they have taken a couple of years though they are apparently one of the easiest to germinate for beginners. They do very quickly compared to lots of others.
I lost some,  maybe not strong plants, still exciting to see what might come.

    I see your alien!

@Guernsey Donkey2 I know what you mean about Blue Dancer but I do like them because they are long and elegant. I should have stood the pot on something high :D
And very much like the montanas too as you can stick nose in the flowers easily.  I love the smell, to me it is a combination of chocolate and almond scent.
Only trouble is it makes me want to buy a certain candy coated mini easter egg.

@BobTheGardener its a beautiful deep purple you have there, stunning display I hope my slightly different ones end up like yours.
You have a question mark about the variety?
Some have such similar characteristics I think only experts in the field seeing them in the flesh can tell.
Edit: Did you check the Hull Uni site "Clematis on the Web" description?

@Rubytoo I know I have bought both Helsingborg and Frances Rivis in the past but can't remember which was which.  I think I lost the FR to honey fungus a few years ago but it wasn't quite as beautiful as Marlorena's!  Must look for another of those. :)
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Helsingborg has staminodes that usually match the tepals, orare grey green , according to Hull site.

Francis Rivis has very white staminodes. (Like Marlorenas)

Sorry you lost yours. If you get a new one you will know for sure...:D        sorry.....

    @Rubytoo

Do you think my Frances Rivis was the genuine article? or do you think it was Blue Dancer... I was never quite sure after I read about it... I bought it as 'FR'...  I can show more photos of close ups if you wish...

@Marlorena sorry as I said it is something experts might get right but not me.
Some descriptions say they are cream staminodes, but you can find pictures and descriptions with white too.

The Tepal length ought to help discriminate.
Blue Dancers is supposed to be the longest at 7.5cm at longest.
Francis Rivis close but less at 6 cm being the longest quoted.
Not an a lot in it depending on the growing condiitions ?
If I am growing BD badly, and you have a done a good job with a FR. How can we tell?

Measured some of mine none is longer than 6.6.
Also earlier i think I mentioned the Hull site mentioning the two versions of Francis, being confused with Blue Dancer.

Frankie has similar colouring but looks shorter.
Think the best we can do is love and enjoy growing them.

Hazel does it get any sun at all or shade all the time?
Hagley Hybrid does quite well in shade. Ours was just in front of/ under conifers in a pot but got a little early sun, probably an hour or so at most.
Nice as it is pale pinky and "glows" in the shade.

@Rubytoo … thank you for taking the time there... next time I get one I might measure those tepals...   I've no idea what killed my plant, but I'd like to try again with it..

@Hazel 1 I was in my local B&M store yesterday, they had really healthy Hagley Hybrid clematis in stock. They were in 9cm pots but had many stems from the base for only £1.99. I bought a Jackmanii clematis for myself ( already have a Hagley Hybrid) and when l potted it on to a 2litre deep pot the roots when teased out a little were very abundant and healthy. I always have to grow on any clematis, my soil is heavy brick clay. Don't know if you have a B&M store near you.
