I love roses too. I have about 50, mostly climbers and shrubs, quite a few from David Austin. I live in Dordogne and have a problem with deer. I had to dig up several roses and put them in pots on the terrace and we fenced part of the garden.

I have New Dawn too, I had it before, in Kent, over 30 years ago. David Austin and the RHS list it as a climber. Roses grew really well in Kent, very fertile clay. I used to win prizes at the village show. They don't grow so well here, summers can be very hot and dry and the soil is alkali, not very deep, on limestone. But I couldn't be without roses.

We went to David Austin's garden a few years ago, in June, when we were on holiday in Shropshire. It was glorious. I came back with a car load.

I've tried to post some photos but it won't work. I've done it before, don't know what is the matter.

The Pilgrim, Falstaff, Tess of the d'Urbervilles, The Fairy, Crown Princess Margareta, Gertrude Jekyll x 3, Kimono, Suttar's Gold, A Shropshire Lad, Malvern Hills, Phyllis Bide, William Shakespeare, Felicité et Perpetué, New Dawn, Mme Alfred Carrière, Rosa Complicata, Tuscany, Clair Matin, Meg climber, climbing Cecile Brunner x 2, Penelope, Charles de Mills, climbing Ena Harkness, Albertine x 3, Wedding Day, Pink Cloud, Pierre de Ronsard (think it's the Eden Rose in the UK), Louise Odier, Paul's Scarlet Climber, Lady Emma Hamilton, Lady of Shallot, Summer Song, Teasing Georgia, Constance Spry x 6, Sister Elizabeth x 2, Compassion and a few pink forgotten the names, also a red hybrid tea.

It's over 50 but I keep losing count.

It has now let me post some photos!

Lovely, lovely roses Busy-Lizzie - wish I had room for more.

If anybody's interested GW mag March issue has a special offer still on until 31st March for 5 Old English roses, in different colours, all fragant, look like DA roses to me, for £13.95, single one £4.99 plus P & P £6.99 -  I am sooo tempted.

Interesting to see Summer song in there. I just ordered it last week after looking at some pics and the different colour.

How’s your experience with it @Busy-Lizzie? Is it a good grower, are stems sturdy enough for the flowers? How tall does it get?

    Thanks!

Thank you. I don't think my roses are in such good condition as yours though, Marlorena.

I made a mistake above - NOT Lady of Shalott, No 3 is Lady Emma Hamilton.

I've only had Summer Song a couple of years and it's in a pot because of the deer problem, also easier to keep control with pots. So many problems here, clay, huge insects, bigger and greedier than in the UK, slugs, moles than undermine my borders, climate, winter can be very cold and summers well into the 30s. It is taller and not as neat and bushy as Lady Emma Hamilton.

I think Lady Emma is my favourite of the orangy David Austin ones. Lovely red tinged leaves when young and gorgeous scent.

Malvern Hills, Teasing Georgia and A Shropshire Lad.
