GW ‘most hated’ plant in polls was...

The ROSE! Followed by dahlias, lavender, hydrangea, hardy geraniums, euphorbia. Some surprises there. Poll results on GW main site (secret garden):

The rose has also been the most loved.

Roses and dahlia are two of my favourites, but I agree about ivy and periwinkle - too invasive in my garden.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I suspect a lot of rose 'hate' comes from a ubiquity and fanaticism that people find is beyond the own ambivalence about the actual plant.  That and some of them being high maintanence resulting in frequently sickly looking specimens (like the one in my garden!).

Likewise dahlia and hydrangea; they seem to drive quite a large and passionate fandom for plants that to others than find over the top or gaudy.

I guess my hate is overly done flowers. Flowers should be like elegant things you find in the wild, not something that has been bred to have a excess of ruffled petels.

Actually my real hate is lawns. My teenage years of having to use the mower has left me with pure hated for them.  Boring, anti-wildlife green deserts of no redeeming feature (other than an area for kids to play).

What a silly, pointless exercise. Grow what you can and like, gaudy or muted, natural or bred and leave other people to do the same.

I though gardeners were supposed to be nice people what's all this "most hated" about?

I have to agree with Posy. Why should anyone care what other folk enjoy growing?
These current polls and trends will all change next year anyway and summat else will be 'the pet hate' or 'must have plant'.

When so many gardens are nothing but hard landscaping, or used to park cars, boats and caravans, or alternative landfill sites for dead cars, washing machines and general rubbish, I rejoice to see any plants at all!

I agree its all a bit silly, just surprised by some of the choices. Begonias did make the list though  ;)

Even lawns aren't a wildlife desert if you leave daisies and speedwell and clover to grow.   Ours is full of weeds and a-buzz with insects as well as an occasional green woodpecker and the hoopoes who come for the ants.
