  • Potted on 4 skimmia cuttings, the tree was in her my daughter's garden when she moved in so we have no idea which one it is. It keeps its spectacular berries all winter, lovely instead of holly. Potted on half a dozen decimated kale seedlings, found some tiny black slugs under the bottoms of the pots. Have taken a chance and taken some hardwood slips from a pittosporum and potted them up.
At last, I was able to light my bonfire, it is now smouldering very gently with a small whisp of smoke despite a shower of rain.
I can barely walk or move but a job well done at last.

I decided to cut the brown bits off my clematis jingle bells, only to discover it's full of ant farmed blackfly because it's weak.
I've got 3, none have ever got to flowering. 😢
  • I topped up the bonfire and did some watering, also a lot of sitting and watching the pond, etc.

"What if we have no time to stand and stare".

This morning, despite having rain during the night, about half the bonfire has burned away. Yeah!

I'm determined not to let the garden 'get away from me' this autumn.  Spring was really hard so I'm trying to keep on top of everything.  Been doing quite a bit of cutting back this week and I've cleaned the greenhouse ready to overwinter the tender plants.  I've also paid to extend my green bin collections for an extra 3 collections at the end and 3 extra collections in early spring.

I felt justified and smug when I got a bit of sneaky bindweed out last night. Ha!

Went to see my friend Marion and planted some foxgloves and verbena bonerences plants.

I cut down the Lucifer crocosmia and pruned the elderflower tree by the side of it before we get any storms.
Started constructing a bug hotel in our car parking area, using an old wooden chest we were going to chuck out.
I've stuck it on it's side so it's tall and narrow, put bricks/twigs/dried leaves and fir cones inside so far.  Bit worried because it's facing west so might get the full force of winds/rain but want it also to look decorative.

Cut the lawns on Friday , now on holiday for 2 weeks , hopefully some Autumn sun shine

  • You know how it is, you go out to do one job and end up doing a dozen.
Pulled the last of the beetroot 2.5kg, that was the job we were supposed to be doing. Then decided to cut down the two outdoor tomatoes and cucumber ( found two mini cues hidden)
Finally got round to sorting the summer Raspberries,  one stem had gone behind the summer house when pulled out it was 12 foot long! The rest are now tied in. Removed the beans stakes, weren't needed no beans this year.
And finally cut back next doors snowberry hangingover our fence, I think it is, and all the hidden seedlings in that corner.
Now to roast the beetroot when the chicken goes in.

Pulled up a lot of ivy, cut back a blackcurrant bush that had been forgotten about and put a lot of old compost around 1 rhododendron. At the moment don't have enough for the others.
