I had planned to have a bonfire yesterday but when I came home from walking the dog both neighbours had put washing out. Did some dead heading and weeding instead, more bonfire fodder. With luck, I might get the bonfire going today.
Today I added 10 imperial fritillaries to my borders and another 60 camassias to my meadow. Collected seeds from Salvia farinacea and sowed half of them straight into plugs in the greenhouse and kept the other half for spring. Gave a haircut to a cotoneaster and a holly standard. Mowed and hoed (amazing how many thousands of seedlings have appeared since the rains!). And planted out some Echinaceas and Scabiosas that I've been growing in pots all summer.
I started to improve the terrible stony soil I have here.
It took a mattock and a pickaxe to get that far. Forget spades here...
I have a lot of soil so started by buying a tatty £50 concrete mixer:
Spent a few hours sorting it out and blowing what felt like a thousand holes in it:
It works though!
Shovel the crap in the top and soil comes out of the bottom. Fill it up, set it going and go do something else for 10 mins whilst it does its thing. Mixed up with some of my homemade compost i'll plant some winter veg in there.
I've sown wild carrot and yarrow collected on a walk, and Eryngium agavifolium from a seed head which accidentally got emptied into my pocket whilst out and about..
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour".
No! Again, when I came home from walking the dog, my neighbour had more washing out. I hope she has finished now. Tomorrow I will, hopefully, have a bonfire.
I picked a posy of mixed flowers, lit a candle, and sat and watched the Queen's funeral. Outside was amazing, there was a total silence, even the birds were quiet.
I've been potting up spring bulbs, tulips, hyacinths, wallflowers and polyanthus in large tubs. Planted the wallflowers along the path in front garden. Today try to cut down the used blackberry canes and cut them up to put in a bag. Can't fit it in the grey wheelie bin until Friday when it will be emptied.

After that, I deadheaded roses, some perennials and cut others down.
