Watered the greenhouse and then had to pick and wash these These were the ones that were waiting after a weekend away, and they were picked clean, and given to neighbours, before we left.
This morning trimmed Hawthorn hedge and Honeysuckle , garden bin rather full
At allotment yesterday morning picked loads of tomatoes, grew plum toms for first time and very impressed, will definitely grow these again , only a few toms left in greenhouse Picked a load of eating apples 🍎 , in fact the most we have had
Deadheaded the roses, hoed over the raised beds where the onions were. Lots of oxalis, and the recent showers have made the weeds go barmy. Cut the dead foliage off the perennials that have Finnished flowering Hubby the edged the beds, cleared dead leaves. Weeded in the fruit cage. He cut the grass a couple of days ago, first time in weeks. Just watered my front (south facing) containers.
Finally, my tomatoes are ripening, very slowly, more than one at a time. On Monday I picked 3 ready to eat. Also picked 8 mini cucumbers. Gave 3 to my neighbour, and 2 to my daughter, kept one fresh for myself and tried 2 different pickling methods with the remainder. I cold pickled one jar and tried the hot water bath method with the remaining 2 jars. The hot water method means the pickle will last longer, until Christmas, if not eaten before. Spent yesterday attending a hospital appoinment.
I did go in the garden when I came home and put in 8ft canes for my late sown French Beans, which are romping away, and watered the greenhouse.
No gardening today. Had an electric light bulb moment re the unwanted Lucifer corms.
I had a day on the road. Delivered 10 large corms of Lucifer, some Mooli Radish and mini cucumbers to my daughter, stopped off at Asda to fill up the car with petrol, delivered the remaining surplus corms to the community garden on my way to the beach, via a long diversion because of works on a level crossing, to walk the dog. I had forgotten the " help yourself" system the community garden has so picked myself a few of the last runner beans and climbing French Beans and picked up several windfall cooking apples to make a pie. A glorious walk on the beach, with hardly anyone there. On the way home I stopped to buy a couple of pairs of kippers and a fresh mackerel at the local greengrocers, stopped at the local GC to buy some more fish for my aquarium which I have restarted, and stopped at the post office to post a letter I have been driving around for at least a week, staggered home to collapse on the sofa with a cup of tea. I am hoping to start my bonfire tomorrow and get on with clearing up debris etc. As long as nothing unexpected turns up.
I planted three blue fescues underneath some roses and dug up the remains of an unwanted akebia quinnata which had gone beserk earlier in the year. It should come with a big warning that it grows really fast and really wide!
I'm hand weeding the gravel drive. I'd let it go a bit wild, just digging out the thugs like dandelions, and any tall weeds - but it looked really untidy, and the neighbours weren't impressed - offering me weedkiller was a bit of a hint... so I'm back to hands and knees weeding, and raking over the parts I've done to dislodge the germinating seedlings. Sigh...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
