I find it somewhat reassuring that it’s not easy to get legal ID docs changed ... but of course that’s no consolation to your family ... hope it gets sorted soon.
I totally agree, but when it's so obviously an error???
I always shop at quiet times - late Friday evening is a favourite for Tesco. There are never less than 2 staff buzzing around the 'self service' checkouts. That is fewer than the number of tills, for sure, but it certainly doesn't put everyone out of a job by any means. I find scanning as I shop very helpful for shopping to a tight budget.

That implies the application of Common Sense in the administration, which, on the whole, is frowned upon these days. Everything must follow procedure, for good reasons, but it eliminates the option for 'oh yes of course - obviously' in any circumstance.

I imagine a lot of jobs have been moved to the home delivery areas, picking and packing as well as extra drivers. Delivery is cheap or free so they have to be making the savings somewhere.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Yes I know ... but the right procedures must be followed ... just supposing it wasn’t an error ... supposing someone had a malign purpose ... believe me I’ve come across all sorts of attempts to do stuff ...

That's it Dove. When you look up how to deal with mistakes there's a good few paragraphs about how to change the name of the baby's father on the certificate It's even more annoying that it's going to cost a fair amount. Wild edges, I wish your Uncle Bridget all the best Bet he got teased at school.
I knew a lad called Carol in our primary school ... he’d been named after an East European soldier who had saved his dad’s life during WW2. Carol was a tough nut ... he was never teased at school 😉

I used to work with a guy called Bev (as in Beverley), lovely lad, you certainly wouldn't tease him about his name if you had any sense though. He was built like a house wall. Funnily enough, one of my (male) neighbours is also called Beverley.
My female cousin had Archibald as a middle name, but it's common in Scotland for middle names to be family surnames. I was 'Katey' through most of my senior school years, from my initials. Funnily enough at the last place I worked, one of the women picked up on the initials and started calling me Katey. That didn't bother me at all but did cause confusion if she was asked a question, didn't know the answer and said "Ask KT (Katey)". Needless to say they were looking for a female.
Back to the problem of getting a birth certificate changed - any change to such a fundamental document requires very close scrutiny and validation. It would worry me far more if somebody could just walk into the registrar and say something is wrong and it was just changed.
Yes to the careful scrutiny and procedures for changing such an important document but no to charging for it when it's an "officialdom" fault. Having been born in a ex colony (parents running a leper colony) I have to apply to that country for a new copy of my birth certificate. Someone kindly confirmed they had located the document and I could receive a new one upon payment of the fee. I have been waiting over a year now for information of the size of the fee and where I should pay it. Gentle reminders receive no answer.
Jobs in supermarkets - only ever one person supervising the self scan checkout area (baskets only) but often 2 or 3 tills staffed out of the 10 or so set aside for people who go round scanning a whole trolleyful as they shop. Not sure how that works as I've never scanned. There is a Collect and Go service and no doubt staff to collate orders but no deliveries tho maybe that will come some day.
