New Year’s Day Flower Count 2019

Each year some of us make a list of plants that are in flower on New Year’s Day.

We’ll be away for a few days and not back until New Year’s Day  and I’m pretty sure my house sitting son won’t be able to identify plants even if he noticed them  ;) so I may have to post my list on 2nd Jan. but here’s the thread all ready and waiting for your flower counts ...

I'm ready, 2 people to ID, plus one to take pics and one to take notes. Wine a mulling spices ready to warm us up after the count.

  • Enjoy your few days away Dove, and I am sure we won't mind if your count is on 2nd. January - we will be doing the same here, and hopefully take a few pictures too.  We had 29 in our garden last New Year's day, but I don't think we will have so many this year as we have been a bit thin on sunshine during the past few weeks.

I'll be heading to the sun, so won't be able to take part.
As we've always been away at this time of year, my garden isn't really aimed at " winter interest" but my daphne is about to burst open and I've still got the odd penstemon and even a zantedeschia or 2 in flower.

  • I for one have no objection if you do yours today/tomorrow @Hostafan1 ... it’s be a shame to miss you out  ;)

@Guernsey Donkey2 I think our list will also be way down on last year ...

I think we'll be down as well. A high count here always includes a lot of leftovers from the summer but many plants had a short flowering due to the heat and drought

  • When I visited her garden the other day @WonkyWomble still had cosmos blooming merrily  :)

Oh dear, won't have much. Since the week when it was -5° to -7° for a few days followed by pouring rain the garden has been a mush and I've cut a lot down and manured it.

No high hopes here in sunless Scotland either!

I like this idea. There's not much in flower in my garden at the moment and some of the plants that are flowering shouldn't be but it's still so mild here.
