  • Thank you for your replies. Fidgetbones- if it is Dahlia, what would I be looking for in the roots?

Japanese Knotweed doesn’t grow in distinct clumps as in your photo.  It spreads underground and send up shoots at random. I would be 99.5% sure it wasn’t.

@jesscrawford75, if you dig it up they should look like brown tubers (a quick Google  for dahlia tubers will show you what they look like). I am pretty sure that it is a dahlia as it seems to be in the same location.

Or maybe you're just a shameless freeloader looking for a quick plug of your business?

Not JKW, definitely a dahlia. The roots are tubers, thick and lumpy. May be as well to dig it up anyway as they aren't always hardy. Store in a cool, frost free place and re-plant next spring.

  • Thanks for all your help. I’m feeling more assured that it’s not the dreaded JKW. 😊

The only other one that caused me some concern was this (photo attached) but can’t see any zig zag leaf pattern or flat edge to the leaves so think it’s something else. Advice welcomed...

I can't really see what it is but it looks like a shrub. JKW isn't a shrub
