@Purplerain, l am very envious. All l have done today is pick up blown over plant pots, some of them are quite heavy, so it shows the strength of the wind. They are tucked in the corner by the garage door, so OH will have some weight lifting to do when he tries to get in there in the morning 😁. I have made a list of possible tulip varieties, but l need to work out how many pots l will have to fill. It won't be anywhere near as many as that lady on GW. Just like the man on Beechgrove, all l could think about was vine weevils. There was an article in one of the papers today saying that Longmeadow had been voted Britain's best loved garden in a survey. Can't say that l agree with that to be honest. (sorry Monty !) https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7343015/Monty.html
@Valley Gardener, l know what you mean about the weather. I heard a whisper that the rest of August is forecast to be pretty rubbish. I suspect it will pick up when the schools go back. As long as the wind drops, l don't care ! Hopefully tomorrow l can get something done - l have got another load of foxgloves ready to pot up, and l'm going stir crazy🤪
Hope @Fran IOM had a good day, l think the weather there might have been a bit mixed.
Good Evening all, @Valley Gardener You were lucky to get a bird bath along with the house. I don't think they are easy to come by nowadays. I dug up one marble along with so much broken crockery it makes you wonder what they did it with it in the old days. There is one bottle stuck in the roots of a tree and impossible to get out so haven't a clue as to what it would look like. Must have been there years. Always hoped to find something interesting. It was strange that your frogs just disappeared. They were doing so well. Hope your garden hasn't suffered too much with all the rain. @AnniD Your weather sounds really bad as well. I also thought that what a day if you were getting married. Have you warned OH about the difficulties awaiting him in the morning getting into the garage? Might be wise. I take it you have now watched GW. Will see what I think of it in the morning. Obviously something about tulips. I've got that article to read about Monty's garden. @Purplerain How many hours was that spent in the garden?! You must be feeling very pleased with yourself. Scotland is usually the last place to get the good weather. Hope it is on its way down here. After all shopping etc was completed I went to the allotment around 4.30. After it had stopped raining this morning it didn't start again till yes 4.30. It wasn't sunny but very warm. I had left the saucer out on the path with a few munchies left on it for the cat and surprised to find it in the middle of the grass area. Couldn't believe my eyes and then when a seagull landed I realised he must have carried it over there and finished off the munchies. At first it wasn't raining too heavy so I was able to fill the bird feeders and have a look around. The gladioli have started to flower along with that bush rose. It is rather like a wild rose but comes up under single petal rose. Quite pretty. Don't think the crocosmia I got from SGC are going to flower this year. Was hoping for a variety of colours. I noticed a bee on the echinops and wondered how it could land on it when I couldn't even touch it. Kept giving it a good knock (the plant) to get him off but took a few goes and then it dropped on to a leaf and looked as though it was in agony. It then disappeared so either flew off or dropped dead. Strange. The shrub which decided it was going to grow after all has got pink flowers coming out and I could have sworn they were yellow last year. Will wait and see when more are showing. Always thought it was St John's Wort but it can't be if it's producing pink flowers. Why when you become somewhat fixated on a certain plant (in my case currently hydrangeas) you start getting emails with offers on hydrangeas? Got one from Mont Rose with one plus two free. Anyone dealt with them before. It says free postage but can't see that happening. Think I've got a bit carried away here so had better finish off before you have all fallen asleep. Wake up to enjoy the rest of your evening.
I looked in quite early and then got distracted when I decided to do cuttings. I took Clematis Montana from the front garden and some Hydrangea Limelight so fingers crossed. I cut them in the pouring rain too because the horrible weather is back. How is it where you all are?
I looked up Mont Rose @Fran IOM and it seems to be a QVC channel. I don't know how good their plants would be. Have the family arrived? I expect you will be busy over the next few days and spending a lot of time in the kitchen.
At Morrisons I got tempted by a big sedum and a large clematis grandiflora for one of the arches. I could never expect the sedum to grow in the ground here, but Monty said they were good for butterflies so mine will stay in a pot. I didn't forget the cats, and bought them a whole chicken along with their other cat food. I poach chicken for them in a big pot and they sit in the kitchen waiting for it lol. @Hazel-1 Chummy was seven years old in April although he looks very young.
The weather forecast doesn't look good @Valley Gardener but that wouldn't stop me from going to the garden centre for your new planter. I hope you managed to get out anyway.
Good Afternoon, Think Mr H should have gone to specsavers. He doesn't realise he is missing out on "afters'. Lovely name for a slug @AnniD ! Weather appears to be improving but still cold and windy. Won't have the time this afternoon to do anything on the allotment but will fill the bird feeders. Will be picking up the visitors shortly so will hopefully find time to look in later. Enjoy your afternoon all. Will get back to you later @Purplerain. Posting at the same time yet again!
Good Evening all, Back again after seven hours. All's quiet with little ones in bed. @Purplerain Hope your cuttings work out well for you. Couldn't have been fun in that weather. I actually ordered those hydrangeas. Three for £8.99 and the postage was free. Will have to wait and see if it was good value for money. They may not get planted out this year so I may have to over winter them. Will let you know. Hope your sedum and clematis grow well. Your cats eat well. Don't think my cat would eat chicken and would prefer the pouches. Chummy looks much younger than seven. Went to feed the birds. Almost felt like winter it was so cold and windy. No birds appeared, no cat and no butterflies. Only a few lone bees. Hopefully the weather will improve tomorrow and there will be more life there. Feeling somewhat tired so will catch up tomorrow.
@Purplerain, Simon and Sebastian survived for another day, probably munching through my plants even now 🙄 There was one hidden behind the dish last night, possibly Cedric, but although Hedgehog sniffed around the other side, he didn't bother with Cedric's side 😁 . Death defying slugs.....
I am late on this morning and the sun is shining on and off. I don't know whether to hang the washing out or not.
I do wish you wouldn't give your slugs names @AnniD. It makes me feel like a serial killer, which I am, when it comes to slugs and snails 😀. I think the neon owl is helpful and I commend you at having that brainwave and acting on it. I have been wafting around picking sweet peas and runner beans, then I remembered the foxgloves so have brought them in for a pot on. Have you done yours?
I hope you are not run off your feet @Fran IOM but I suspect you are. I love the novelty of a two year old running around but it soon wears off when they have tantrums. I think its a good idea to keep your hydrangeas over winter if they are small and you could pot them on to give them a good start. I hope the weather warms up and you can all have the planned allotment picnic.
@Valley Gardener let us know if you got your Heucheras. The combination of that with bulbs sounds very nice. I really should be ordering, but this year I will chance it and see if the species tulips come back in their pots. I will get some Alliums, especially the late flowering drumstick variety. I saw them on a garden visit and they looked quite architectural but that is all I will buy for next year.
@AnniD That's brilliant! I'm glad he's spotted the neon Owl Restaurant sign, the slugs are very daring.......SAS style! Slugs Are Stupid.
Well I got to the Garden Centre, and had a good bimble round, reading labels pricing things up etc. I bought....... Heuchera. Marmalade Heuchera. Indian Summer Boysenberry 20 Kotschyanus crocus. (Autumn flowering) A Magenta Cyclamen for a bit of instant colour. And a "White Ivy" to trail over onto the dark wood planter.
I kept it to two Heucheras as thought they will bush out later.
Now I just have to fill it and plant. @Purplerain I picked up some huge Alliums today,as this year's were so lovely, and the seed heads looked good for weeks after. But like you,I won't get anymore spring bulbs. My tulips increased anyway...😊😊
@Fran IOM Hope you are enjoying the company and get to go on the picnic. Warmish here today, but had a shower about an hour ago.......short and sharp!
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
Sorry @Purplerain, l will refer to them as Slug One and Slug Two in future 😁 ! If l said l thought he looked like a Sebastian though, do you think those nice men in white coats would take me away? I counted up the number of foxgloves l have potted up today, and they total 92 😮. I had a brainwave and put some into packs of 4 and 6 using old bedding plant holders, therefore recycling at the same time. I have no idea if they will all fit in the car when the time comes, l have some other odds and ends l want to take as well. I predict much eye rolling from OH. Hopefully they will be ready to go in a month or so, there are plants everywhere. If l wanted to sit on the bench, l would have to shift a load of pots first. I have deadheaded heleniums (as instructed by Monty), got rid of the hanging basket of tomatoes (not a success)and pottered around. The green waste bin is full and there's still a week to go before it's emptied ! Think l will have to ask the neighbours, we do help each other out.
@Valley Gardener, love the SAS motto 😁. You got a good haul at the garden centre, l'm looking forward to a photo when it's all done. We had one shower just after l put the first lot of washing out - you should have heard the language. Fortunately it's stayed dry since, and the sun is out. I am giving the solar owls a boost on the patio table at the moment ! Hopefully it stayed dry for you, it has been a bit chilly when the sun went in, l had to dig out my garden anorak for the first time in ages.
Hope @Fran IOM had had a good day and the 2 year old behaved as well as any 2 year old can
Time to prepare a fish pie with home grown runner beans, there are quite a few ladybird larvae on the runner bean leaves, so l'm hoping the blackfly will be disappearing soon.
