Good Morning all. You must be feeling somewhat lonely there @AnniD. We are late today. Love your photos and those on Garden Gallery thread. I would appear to have some white Buddleia growing although I thought I had planted Spirea. Will have to wait until it's more established and take a photo. Managed to watch the last half hour of GW this morning and will watch the first half on my laptop. Kiftsgate was beautiful especially the part with all the green hedges and water. Wouldn't like to have to cut those. Mine is quite enough for me. My 5p clematis was still looking good yesterday when I went over in the rain to feed the birds. When I planted the Phygelius I had the foresight to put down a few slug pellets (couldn't think what else to do) and wasn't I glad as it would have just been a skeleton now. Bought a healthy looking Delphinium in the pound shop yesterday as I haven't had any before. Called Cherry Blossom. To give them credit the plants had somehow been watered but can't see the point of watering the completely dead ones which outnumbered the healthy ones. Today looks like another no gardening day so with all the rain the grass is going to be even higher. @Purplerain and @Valley Gardener. Maybe your weather isn't fit to do any gardening. Don't think the rain is going to stop here so hope tomorrow will be an improvement. Enjoy your day. Will visit later.
Good afternoon all. Well, I only went out to feed some roses but ended up clearing out an area to give my hydrangea vanille frais room to breathe. It was hard work, especially removing the Iris Sibiricus. That was a"man" job and I am not being sexist lol. They have stronger muscles, but after some blood sweat and tears I got it out. Then came the Lupin, then the Bowles Mauve. I have plenty of Bowles Mauve bursting out of their pots from cuttings I took back in April so will replace the old ones.
I love your Buddleias @AnniD, and I did plant one, but dug it out when @Valley Gardener struggled with hers. They self seed here as a neighbour never cuts her massive one so I didn't fancy struggling with roots.
@Fran IOM I enjoyed Kiftsgate too and you must let us know what you thought of it Anni the next time you are in the area. When are you going to put your delphinium out? I am going to overwinter the ones I have coming on as seedlings, but like you, I have a couple of rescued ones and not sure about planting out. The rain has stopped here but I took advantage of the soft ground for weeding. Always a silver lining 🙂. I hope your rain stops soon.
Finally, this is a pic I took a couple of days ago. It's a peachy coloured Hemerocallis but not sure of its actual name:
Good Afternoon all, Typical weather. Hasn't stopped raining all day but stops now when it is too late to do any gardening. You have been busy @Purplerain. You will probably have a few aches tomorrow after all that digging. I have a Buddleia Globosa outside which must have been planted many years ago and you can see some of the root out of the ground. I hate it. It would literally need a JCB to remove it. My lupins just disappeared completely in spite of spraying them with Neem Oil. Will never bother again which is a shame as I do like them. Maybe in pots? Hopefully I shall plant out the Delphinium tomorrow. It was about six inches high and healthy looking. Love the colour of your Hemerocallis. Haven't heard of them before. Will now post a couple of photos.... My favourite Astilbe.
One heuchera which wasn't meant to be on here but don't know how to take it off!
And finally another of my many Heucheras. Over crowded as usual but I can prune the Japonica bush behind it.
I noticed the other day that one of my Heucheras has sent out possibly the flower stem and it has rooted providing me with yet another one!
Hope you are all having a good day and better weather.
@Purplerain you have certainly been putting the effort in! It's always nice when you can see the difference the work has made. That hemerocallis is very pretty. I have only tried growing one once, it was not a success, maybe l should try again. @Fran IOM , buddleia globosa is not one of my favourites either, maybe you could try growing a clematis through it ? Glad to see the heucheras are doing well. I like the pink of that astilbe, my soil is too dry to have much success with them, sadly. Have done some pricking out and sowing (detailed on the Anyone done thread) . Not a bad day, but every time the sun goes in, the breeze gets up, so l had to do my sowing indoors instead of on the patio. I had visions of losing them all otherwise. Have been yawning my head off since 6pm, hoping for a better night's sleep tonight! Hope everyone has had a good Sunday, including @Valley Gardener x
@AnniD Have read all your hard work on the other thread. It doesn't sound as though you had any rain in spite of having to be indoors. It was somewhat cold here today along with all the rain. It seems to have been a long day for some reason. The Buddleia has got to be pruned right down when I get the chance. It is so big a clematis would get lost in it. I feel that if an Astilbe will grow in my soil it will surely grow in yours. They don't seem to be fussy. Have you tried them and lost them? They disappear over winter and you have to remember where they are. I made the mistake of planting too near to where it was going to reappear this year. Hope you have a better night's sleep. Hope you have had a good day @Valley Gardener and @Purplerain. Goodnight all.
Lovely Astilbe @Fran IOM and they do well in my soil too, so maybe worth a try Anni.
The common name for the Hemerocallis is the Day Lily Fran. Each flower blooms only for a day but there are lots of buds so it gives a good display at this time of the year. They bulk up so need dividing every three years or so.
I had to laugh about the Globosa, as I used to have one too. That makes three of us who don't like them, and having been told they are rare, I know why. Not many people grow them through choice.
Just watched Poldark so off to bed now. Hope you had a good day out @Valley Gardener.
Good afternoon everyone Good night's sleep last night, thank goodness, although according to the lady on the lunchtime forecast, we might be in for another muggy night tonight. As we have rain forecast for tomorrow, l planted 3 white "Victoria" asters, also sowed the soaked cerinthe seeds, and cut down the sweet peas and disposed of them. The powdery mildew was worse than l thought, and as they were a focal point on the patio, they really had to go. Rehomed 3 ladybirds on to my runner beans and told them to help themselves to blackfly. Mr B came for some suet, he seems to go through phases. Sometimes l don't see him for ages, then he turns up every 5 minutes. Mouse turned up last night, l have a couple of photos but my computer is having something technical done to it at the moment by OH, so they might have to wait until tomorrow.
@Fran IOM@Purplerain l have looked into astilbes a bit more. The trouble is they like a bit of shade and moist soil, both of which are in rather short supply here. There is one place they could go, but that has a massive miscanthus (l think), and l really don't fancy trying to get that out ! I see the SGC email has arrived, l think l might take a quick look, just to be polite....... Next door neighbour came round with some fruit scones she had made, so l think it's time for a cuppa . Hope @Valley Gardener had a good day yesterday. Anni
A truly lovely day yesterday, Laugharne is a stunning place, three converging rivers into one massive estuary, I didn't want to leave.
Astilbes are a nice addition,I must admit my first garden was dry and sandy,so didn't have a clue when I planted one,but it did very well and got sun all afternoon. I should give it a go Anni. I didn't grow sweet peas this year, but enjoyed ripping out the finished ones last year. They look awful when they're over.
I found a little self rooted Golden pyracantha, and also noticed one of my more expensive Salvias, has taken where I accidentally broke a stem off and just stuck it in the ground, nice to get freebies. Forecast bad for tomorrow, unless you're praying for rain in the east.
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
Laugharne sounds lovely @Valley Gardener any chance of some pics? I just went out to the garden to quickly photograph Astilbe and almost got beaten to death by butterflies everywhere! I can't take the credit for it though, it's the huge Buddleia that never gets cut over the back of the garden.
This Astilbe is growing in a South facing full sun garden @AnniD. Full sun in Scotland might not be the same where you are though @AnniD 😀. Looking forward to seeing mouse again when you can get a pic.
