I'm sure a good grumble per day does us good, after a certain age... I was brought up in a little bungalow with a market garden, in a village which had expanded in the 1930s to include 2 extra roads of similar tiny houses with big gardens, in rural Hertfordshire, surrounded by green belt. By the time I left home in the early '70s the M1 had been built at the bottom of our little road, and then some years later it was doubled in width to accommodate the increased traffic. Soon after I left, a huge junction was constructed with the M25, with a "Little Chef" a couple of hundred yards from my primary school. I've never been back since my parents moved north in 1978.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
My parents' house was built on what had been a nursery garden, but that didn't stop Mum complaining in later years about the amount of building on fields around her. Until this thread I hadn't though about the irony in that.
We are fortunate where we live. It's a long established suburb where the roads are a decent width even if cars are parked both sides of the road. Long gardens, and nowhere to build additional houses in quantity (famous last words).
Woken up at 4am by very loud fireworks, more like the ones you get at a professional display. My first thought was that it was the firework store about 1.5 miles away, but turns out they were set off by someone outside some shops about the same distance from here. The comments on social media would indicate that l wasn't the only one . Apparently the police received one phone call, but they "did not deploy". That also makes me feel curmudgeonly - why can't they say they did not attend ?

why couldn't they be honest and say " couldn't be bothered"?
We lived in a new build estate in 1987. A couple of years later, they cleared more trees and built more houses. A couple of years later there was a proposal to carry on the road and cut down more trees to build more houses. The outcry! " how dare they cut down trees!!!!!" Clearly it was ok to cut down trees to build THEIR houses, but not for anyone else.
@Hostafan1 "why couldn't they be honest and say " couldn't be bothered"?"
My thoughts exactly they really can not be bothered anymore they will tell you its all the cut's but really?
I rang 999 a couple of weeks ago. some guy was driving a mini digger down out street on the path no lights the best bit was he got it wedged under the bus stop opposite.
I explained this to the nice lady in the control room thinking it was probably stolen from the building site down the road and here was the opportunity to catch the guy red handed.
Her response was I will pass it on but I don't think they will attend and hung up.
A week later we find out the site down the road had been broken into and guess what was stolen yep a mini digger and tools.
I did go down to the site and tell them what I had done and the guy there told me it took three days for the police to turn up after they reported the theft and then it was only a PCSO on a bike " couldn't be bothered"?"

It seems to me that the only reason to report a crime these days is to get a number for the insurance. There is no real expectation that any investigation will take place. We must all be grateful that this government's stated priority was dealing with crime. How much worse it would be if we had a government that didn't care!

You should have phoned them back and said ‘don’t need to respond, someone’s just shot him.’
