Alkyone, who's always thrilled with her Easter candles, is now taking ballet classes. This year, her mother bought her a suitable candle. She loves it, so she sent me a picture to admire too!
I have a dream that my.. children.. one day..
will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their
character
Thank you, Phaidra, for the beautiful "Come and Receive Light". I absolutely love the Byzantine music of the Orthodox Church. I have had a few Easters in Greece and know it's an unforgettable experience. I wish I were there right now!
I loved the church music, Phaidra. I wish I knew the meaning of the words.
Your wish is my command! Of course, Artemis is the Classicist (though her Modern Greek is perfect too) but as I'm fairly well acquainted with Alexandrian Greek, in which the New Testament and most of the Liturgy is written, I'll translate it; Artemis can correct me if I'm wrong!
Come, receive light
Of the non-setting Light
And glorify Christ
Who has risen from the dead.
The single voice you hear is that of the priest who exits the Holy of Holies carrying his lighted candles and invites the congregation, in the dark church, to receive the light of Christ; some of whom are already by the doors waiting for him. When he finishes the hymn, he returns to the H of H and each of the quoirs (2 of them) sing it in turn once, so you hear it three times- 3 is an important number in Christianity, as you may know. The rest of the people receive light from each other.
