I was wondering the same - whether to leave the penstemon cuttings which are tall (4 - 6 inches) but with no side shoots. I will nip the tops off them. At present they are still in small pots in our cold conservatory.

If they're 6" tall, I'd cut about 4" off and make another cutting with it.

That’s the way to do it😀

Jumping in here... my Ravens are no way near 6in tall... planted cuttings for the first time last autumn... they seem healthy, and I pinched little tops off a week or so ago...
My penstemon questions are, can I soon plant them out into the bed? And will they flower later this year?
I would give then another month, they probably will flower but they’ll be small, it’s a good idea to pick off any flowering buds this year so that the root of the plant can build up. But next year they’ll be lovely.

Janie B, your Penstemon are about the same size as mine. Mine look small and weak and will look pathetic in my flower bed this year - however I will follow the instructions from those in the know and nip the top couple of inches off. Can I keep them in their pots until next Spring? - Thanks for the advice

I think you'll find it's the other way round.
