Ballooning is fab, but yes very weather-dependent. If you do a V****n Experience or similar then book it sooner rather than later so that if it's cancelled due to the weather there's time to reschedule. It's usually done at sunrise or sunset due to the best thermals so you need to be flexible about timing too.
Chislehurst Caves? A constang temperature inside, interesting wartime history, good stories. Not extravagant, but a bit off the beaten track.

I visited Boston in December (about 30 years ago) and yes it was cold, but much more like alpine cold than UK cold. I was only there a few days so the weather i experienced may not be typical. I went jogging at 8am beside the Charles River, it was frozen at the edges and the grass was frosted, but I was comfortable in a track suit, woolly hat and gloves. The sun shone brightly from a cloudless bright blue sky and the city looked fabulous. That sort of dry cold doesn't sink into your bones like it does in this country.
Your young friend might enjoy a weekend in Brighton, it's a fun and funky city, and the quaint and historic county town of Lewes is just a few miles away. The second half of September is usually mellow, so that will be a good time for the countryside.
Wookey Hole? It's warm, it's weird, it is a bit touristy, true, but still naturally awesome. And then you can go to Wells and relive the entire Hot Fuzz movie

My daughter looks on the internet and gets tickets for Warwick castle at BOGOF. You may find an offer still on. Usually the tickets get you into a theme park as well.

I'd check the internet for offers for everywhere you decide upon. A few minutes research might save you enough to pay for the fuel to get there , or cover the cost of lunch etc.
