Lichen 'garden' on a wooden bench!

Went round an NGS garden today and absolutely loved this bench.The lichens make a 'garden' all of their own!  :)

    I did actually ask about it.It's about 25 years in the making!
    Many of the trees and shrubs were covered as well,so no help just nature and a lot of time!
    We also have a lot of clean air here on the Isle of Wight which helps.

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

    The trouble might be , that if your air wasn't clean enough, it'd all just die. 
    If you sit still long enough down here in Devon, that's what happens.( and part of the reason so few people have wooden furniture)

    Here too. The trunks and branches of my Golden Willows look like that.  
    Very pretty.

    I inherited my parents garden bench, with patches of lichen on it - been there for 30 years.  Unfortunately when I moved counties it had to sit in the sun and they died. So sad.  I’m glad others appreciate these things. I remember one friend who didn’t want to sit on the bench because it was dirty!

    I know someone who would take a bleachy scrubbing brush to that!!!  :(
